I can consider the full time job part as an argument... but really,
you don't have to make anything up level wise. If you are
recreating something, you already have the hardest part done for
you. The level should be laid out and you just have to recreate it
the best you can. I've only been working for a few hours and I
have to say that I think I'm coming along nicely.

Sneak Peek below; I encourage anyone to guess my remake:

Well, I'm in a certain situation here. I know I could make the deadline however. I'm just worried about the
current quality. I could release it in a rushed manor or I could just make a thread showing what I've done, and then
polish it for release. I'm thinking that the contest is a good idea and all but I'd rather perfect it before making it
public. Well, now that I think about it, I could release it privately here and then polish it up after the fact and
release a pubic version. Ah, decisions, decisions.

I could use the points but then again, I don't need more then $10 worth either and thats not a lot to spend really.

Hmmmm. I will have to see where I'm going to go with this myself.

How much memory do you have and what operating system are you running?

I've got 2 GB of RAM and I'm running XP (16 bit) SP3. It's a bit odd as the error hangs at the same point, even if i reduce the number of entities in my level. I took 25% of my entities out and it still hangs at the samepoint (see pic).

Your computer RAM shouldn't matter as long as you meet the minimum requirements because the memcap on FPSC is set at 1.85GB anyway(I believe it's at 1.85). Anyway, have you tried lowering your lightmapquality? You should also consider lowering the texture resolution on entities/segments that the player won't be examining up close. And make sure you delete all of your bin/dbo files before recompiling the changes.

got a little further. Set my lightmap texture size to 128, left the quality at 5 and i now hit the 1.85 GB limit.

it seems i've got about 1 GB in entities which is crazy! I've calculated i've got less than 350 separately named entities in my level so this makes each entity about 3 MB in size.

I guess i'd better scale back my ideas and remove some more entities

The whole RAM usage is not just models,it is also lightmap processing, physics initializing etc...

@charger bandit: I understand that, I was just speculating how much of the 1.85 GB was make up by the models for my level.

Before FPSC starts loading in the entities (i.e. after light maping and physics) it sits at 750 MB so i'm guessing the next 1.something GB is made up of the models.

I'm going to re-think what I can keep/remove and try again tonight.

You can configure the memcap to be turned off if you so wish. Also, it does matter when you have something like Vista
as your OS. I have 8gb of ram in my desktop (which I will agree is overkill but its also a very fast DDR3 brand.)
Odds are he has DDR2 Ram which is also a setback (along with the memory timing).

Well, I don't know what to tell you other then maybe you need an upgrade if you want to handle building bigger and
more ambitious levels in the future.[i]

Ouch. Well, then that solves my suspicions. At any rate, you need a whole new computer it would seem. That motherboard is
completely outdated by now and I doubt it supports SATA to some degree. Anyways, if you need tips to buying a PC, hit
me up. I build custom computers and deal with stuff like this all the time. I might save you a buck and get you a machine
with good enough specs for FPSC. I know what the minimal requirements used to be, but with all these updates... thats
easily changed over time.

Cheers ASTEK - I may take you up on that, but I need a laptop, not a desktop. I do all my FPSCing on the train to and from work.

OK, so under a week to go and I've finally managed to build my level. you can find the link here: LINK REMOVED

I SHALL ENTER

Though it seems a little crazy to work on it when there are only very few days left in the competition. I am only going to re-create level one of Wolfenstien 3d. In-fact, I'm working on some textures for it now. I'll post a WIP thread later today!

I've also spotted a few other bugs that I need to fix. I'll re-submit my entry in a few days (i.e. just before the deadline)

I'm uploading my entry right now. Truth be told, I don't think I will continue on this unless I get a dedicate
team going on it. It was a fun attempt but with my schooling and life getting more stressful and frustrating,
I simply can't do it all on my own and make a great game, do well in life, etc and so forth. I take back anything
I said before. Life can totally make a game hard to work on and ensure quality. Plus, if I do continue in FPSC, I'd
like to actually make something I could distribute freely. IDK really... its just one big headache.

Best of luck to everyone.

EDIT- Here is my entry: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=W62H4JPT

ASTEK I can totally understand - RL should always come first. I personally only do FPSC for fun and the moment making a game becomes stressful i ditch it because RL is stressful enough.

I'll be uploading mine tonight - just got to build the exe on the train home

Good luck to you too.

I am actually quite happy with the half-a-level re-make I have already produced in the past few days. And in all honesty, I think the second half would be a little more difficult to create in a similar style to the original Wolfenstien 3D. As a result I shall be submitting my half a level re-make of the first mission from Wolfenstien 3D.

Here is the link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSPUFWP1

Also, this re-make does not have custom menus etc. However it does include the Wolfenstien 3D music.

I want to submit GoldenEye Bunker II as a classic remake. I tried to stay true to the game.
While the watch mechanics and some other things aren't included, its the best I could do in FPSC with the time I had on hand to do such.

Mine is a modern remake.
I'll make a Showcase thread once I get a stable build.
My entry is still very buggy and not quite done yet, but I'll still release a version for the contest

I've been having issues with FPSC lately so I don't know if I can get my game submitted on time... If I don't submit it today then, well... I'm out. Sorry.

Mine is (after much thought) Category A, this is because I have tried to maintain the look and feel of the original game, except with a simple graphical improvement. I have a strong feeling I will lose but hey, it was fun!

So... Yeah. I'm really anxious to start seeing results fly in. I also hope that the Doom remake makes it in here on time.
This contest actually made me go the extra mile to make the game even in the face of the hardships FPSC gave me.

I might not make a better version of my entry but at least I tried to make a half decent attempt; I guess that counts.

Did you not upload to a site like megaupload? The TGC forums wont
allow for such a big file to upload.
