Hello.

Alright, this is gonna sound completely stupid...but I'm hoping to get a Radeon 9800 agpx8 (or something). I think my computer is a 4 agp port. How can I tell short of tacking it apart, and if i do that, then where do i look? And if i had to buy a new motherboard, what would you suggest...i have a mini tower. I know thats a bit kryiptic(spelling?) but please help me.

Domo Arigato.

I wouldn't be so paranoid if people would just stop looking at me!

don't take it apart to check, you'll just see an AGP port - look up your motherboard model # online and get the spec sheet. If the port is 4x and the card is 8x it doesn't matter (the card will just step down) but the VOLTAGE of the card/port is very very important!!!

be careful

if you already have a Radeon or GeForce card then thier display panels will tell you all you need to know.

Check within your BIOS..
If the MB has AGP you will find an AGPx setting there..
The max appliable value will be your AGP max factor
cheers..

Ok ta very much guys

The card came in the post today. I think i have the 4 port but as i can see this, then it must be working. Its a radeon 128mb 9800 se. I need to try homeworld 2 now to see if it has improved cos i was running a radeon ve before. If its cool then i might just leave it but if an 8port will drastically improve it then i might get an 8 port. I wonder how halo will run???

Cheers all!

Yup
In fact, you won't even find a difference if it was 1X. I believe.
Heh. That's funny.

depends what you see as an affordable price
watford electronics sell one for £100 ... AGP8x isn't a gimmic, as long as you have alot of Ram.

Basically if you have an AGP8x socket it means that you can use your ram upto 4.1gbit/sec which allows things suchas FSAA at the more extreme resolutions to become alot faster. It also allows you to run more Ram intensive games, suchas Jedi Academy and the upcomming Max Payne 2 - etc at a decent speed rather than having to wait for your ram to catch up with your graphics card.

It also allows faster access of the CPU, which if you have a Hyperthread or HyperTransport processor means that any overflow that your card has will be transfered FIFO at approx 800mhz fsb rather than the normal 400fsb that your RAMDAC dictacts.

one reason why PCI Express is never going to make the AGP versions of cards disappear like everyone believes it will, is although they have wider bandwidth they're still slower because you still have to run through the chipset everything your want to do ... whereas AGP is directly tied into the RAM and CPU which allows for a higher degree of communitcation and it proves faster in the crunch zone.
Although PCIX is capable of keeping up with AGP8x memory wise, when it comes to the CPU operations its still only around AGP2x speed.

speed... the core processor is much faster on the ultra.
it also has some other little tweaks, like more nv shadows and such.

well homeworld 2 runs pretty fast but still has laggs here and there...and halo...but i think that that's down to some demanding hardware options anyway.

The heat in my room has increased. It's bloodey hot. I was worried that the fan wasn't working properly, but it would have burned itself out by now right?

if you fan wasn't working you'd know
a) your machine would be ALOT quieter
b) you'd smell something

trust me i've killed a good amount of CPU's in my time to know this all too well hehee, it a pretty pleasent smell to actually

the second edition is a MAJOR overhaul from the original, and honestly to prevent confusion about the features of the card they should've released it as 9900.

Basically they've added things which weren't in the original, like the Fragment Buffer (F-Buffer) to allow for unlimited fragment programs and such. Not that the F-Buffer is as good as it seems cause it actually slows down the Radeons ability to process pixel shaders as it need to take extra loops to sync the data for compiling and with no cache for the buffer means it has to run at the vrams speed... which is dandy if your running 4/800mhz FSB but if your not then your card will suffer some serious speed loss.

(not that when ever these cards are benchmarked they let you know about stuff like that)

I dont think radeon9800SE is supposed to be the radeon9900

look here:

http://www.overclockers.co.nz/ocnz/review.php?id=03vga00r9800se0powercolr9800se00105

i think it is a little slower than the radeon9800Pro or radeon9800XT

mmh I begin to wonder what SE means. Slower Edition? i remember there was a GeForce4 TI4800 and a GeForce4 TI4800SE, whereby the SE was slower, too.

yeah its slower than the pro and XT, only it has the same features as the XT...
think of it as the 9800 and 9800pro - then you have the new 9800SE and 9800XT
the XT stands for something stupid like eXtra Turbo.

the SE is slower simply because it is doing more than the 9800pro, which i really hate about the current site and specs cause if you look at what the the 9800 series can do you'd think that the the 9800 and 9800pro have unlimited fragment programs cause of the F-Buffer ... but that is only a feature present in the SE and XTs
and just try finding a card specific technical specs, i searched for a good 20-30mins over the entire website ... still can't tell you EXACTLY what each card has because there is no individual specs, the closest you get is the manual with its general overview.

(and they wonder why so mant developers get pissed off devving for thier cards)

I thought it was to do with memory bandwidth.

only 64 on the 9600se isn't it the same on the 9800se?
