im using bond1-s norm_spec_tangentbasis.fx.

The segment has all the required textures.

However, ambient had little to no effect on the walls. Theyr still clearly visible when ambient is 0 and there are no lights.
Illumination maps (_I) are quite normal too, not too bright.
so from where does it take its "light"?

Oh and edit... it seems to be with other shaders too (eg the stock vent system - at ambient 0 its extremely illuminated -_-).

The shaders work with static lights. You need to have at least one in your level for them to work properly.

hmm well i did set a light, its almost ok.. but it still seems to have the spots u look at illuminated in complete darkness - downside of using shaders?

EDIT: added a pic

Would any of the shaders enable normal/illumination and actually wouldn't shine if its complete darkness... as if the player glows -_-

It's just the way the specular highlights are made.

good frame rates matter... and a low ping might help XD
