Hi FPSC users,

I have been using 3DS Max for five days, and I decided to improve my modeling skill by creating these entities. Well, my skill isn't so good and the models are too, but I think these stuffs could be useful for those who don't have time to create their own.
This minipack included a corkboard and a wooden crate.

Please notice that you can edit, sell or do whatever you want with these models without asking me for permission. And also, I do not own the textures' copyrights.

Sincerely,
BenJ

p/s : I have had a connection problem, so if my post is duplicated, please delete them. Thanks.

...your generosity is appreciated.

I am puzzled as to why you chose to balloon the .dds textures to a whopping
61 MB each, for such remedial objects as a crate and a corkboard.

Quote: "...I do not own the textures' copyrights..."

Who does? You have the obligation to tell us.

You'll need to provide some licensing information, in which the original artist
details authorized usage of his/her media.

In the meantime, I'll delete this media from my HD, just to keep everything legal.

Most of the textures are owe by http://my3dtextures.com/
I found the crate texture provided with a tutorial here : http://ployin3d.blogspot.com/2011/01/modeling-wooden-box-in-3d-studio-max.html
The corkboard texture is here : corkboardpage.com
Well, this is my first time creating models for FPSC, so there would be unendurable issues. Thank Seth for reminding me such important things I will look into the dds files later.

...I would strongly suggest pulling the DL link, until you can provide all of the
licensing information regarding the textures, BenJ.

EDIT:

http://ployin3d.blogspot.com/2011/01/modeling-wooden-box-in-3d-studio-max.html

Vince Sheehan provided the .max file DL, with the texture already integrated
into the scene.

Texture does not appear to be made available seperately, and the licensing is
not clear.

http://corkboardpage.com/

It is probably best to contact them via the email address from their site, and
make a request for license information regarding background textures used on
their site:

This is the included texture : http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HhMCiR9IIZ4/TS0JVosVinI/AAAAAAAAASc/Q2gvc3-VbBM/s1600/Wooden+Box.jpg

If it's clear that I don't have any permission to use this texture on my model, then I will re-texture the crate using textures from http://my3dtextures.com/

...it's assumed that the artist intended you to be able to apply it onto your own
model, as this is supplied media for the tutorial.

What is unclear, is whether distribution by the end user is allowed, and if so,
what restrictions apply if it is.

I repeat, you would be very wise to pull the DL link, until licensing has been fully
established.

I have pulled the DL and sent a request to the administrator of the corkboardpage.
About the wooden crate's texture : What should I do to have my permission guaranteed ? Should I send an email to the author and request permission ?

...that would be a very good idea.

If the texture is his, he may just give you written permissions. If it's the work of
another, most likely he will be able to supply the original license to you.

You could of course fire up your graphics program of choice, and create your own
custom textures from scratch.

Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro are weapons of choice, but GIMP is a fantastic
free alternative for the artist on a budget.

I have posted a comment on the tutorial page
Thank you very much for the informations. While waiting for reply on Vince, I will keep going on my project. Download link will be restore as soon as the licensing is cleared.

Well both Vince and corkboardpage's administrator have replied and they said that I can use their texture freely.
Can I re-upload the files now ?

It's your responsibility to prove that you have permission to use the textures
and redistribute them.

Do you think that you've accomplished this burden, by simply telling us?

What exactly does "use their texture freely" mean?

Amazing response time, for both the administrator and artist.

Best of luck in your future endeavours.

Are you serious?

These were created using a tutorial that hundreds if not thousands of people have followed. The wooden crate texture at least, is freely available on that site, and i'm 99% sure i've seen it on others.

The 'instructor' provided this image to allow his users to create an exact replica of his reference model. There is absolutley no expectation of copyright. This model has likely been created and re-distributed hundreds of times. The tutorial and textures themselves were designed for replication and distribution.

Frankly, you are going way too far with this and your last comments were simply uncalled for. It almost seems as though you're pestering the poor guy just for your own personal amusement.

...matter of opinion.

His own words:

Quote: "I do not own the textures' copyrights."

Don't lecture me for continuing the query, and mentioning he should clarify
permissions.

I'm a graphic artist, and deal with copyright issues all the time.

Your hazing is just unfounded...

You were backing this guy in a corner. If you didn't want the textures due to your inability to satisify validation -- don't download it. You're not 'teaching' him anything by being rude.

Besides, he didn't do anything wrong in the first place. He came with the same logical assumption as most would when he visited that site and made his model. There is no reason to expect copyright on that texture. Even so, he was honest and said he didn't own the texture...

It doesn't come across that way.

I would suggest you use this site CGTextures. This is it's license agreement.

Less problems this way.

Well, I just want to support other people with free models, even though my models are just a pile of scraps. The reason I don't want to look for textures on free sites is because, they don't have the right textures I need.

Both Vince and Corkboardpage's Administrator respond to my email right after I sent it to them, and they all said that they DO NOT own these textures, and I don't know if they still remember where they have picked these textures up.

Oh well, I'll re-texture those models as soon as I can.

Thank for visiting my topic.

That is why you use the textures on those free texture websites as a base for your own work. It's up to you to modify them to suit your needs. Trust me, it's a much better alternative to learn to make your own textures that you can use on your models and distribute them freely without worry, than using copyrighted textures where you have to ask the original creator permission to release your work with them every time you want to share a new model.

I guess you missed this part of the license.
Quote: "LICENSE

CGTextures offers photographs of materials ("Textures") on its website (www.cgtextures.com) for game developers, special effects artists, graphic designers and other professions. No payment or royalties are required to use these Textures. The use of Textures is non-exclusive, royalty free, and you have the right to modify them for the uses permitted under the clause Conditions of Use.
Most Textures on the CGTextures website are photographed by CGTextures. A small part is photographed by third party contributors ("Contributors"). CGTextures has separate agreements with these Contributors in which they grant CGTextures permission to add their Textures to the website. All terms and conditions in this License apply to both groups of Textures.
All Textures and materials remain in ownership of CGTextures or the Contributor and the Textures and materials are licensed to you, not sold.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

All materials including the organization and presentation of these materials on the CGTextures website are the property of CGTextures or its Contributors and are protected by intellectual property laws. Some images contain graphic materials like wallpaper patterns, logos, names or signs. The use of these kind of images is at your own discretion. The rights for the photo lie with CGTextures and the photo has been taken in a public space, but using the patterns, logos or name in your work might not be allowed.

"

Free or not, the rights are clear on this site. I also realize how hard some can be on here. Textures are a big thing, but some of us older ones on here want to make sure you are safe at what you do. Seth is doing just that. Here is the cork board.

Here is for the crate.
or you can use something like this

I have used this site many times and I also have contributed to it. Here is something similar to your wood crate using textures (the last link above)from the site.

Here is the texture to the crate and you can see how I edited it from the original.

I hope this helps you some.
