Might I suggest a similar approach to that of the php docs system?

A concise syntax guide is cool, but like you say - it isn't always enough. However, while tutorials can be nice, they always seem to be pitched at the wrong angle. It takes you an hour to read through a tutorial, just to let it get to the point!
I often find that the user submitted comments present the quickest answers for intermediate/advanced users; it always seems that someone else has run into a similar problem
