Did you make the models or are you just redistributing them? Make sure you have permission from the original author to redistribute their work before giving them away.

Hey thanks for the replies,
But what do you mean Seth?
Is there something wrong with the models?
And how is this related to that pirate song?

Um, I played Halo CE for SEVERAL YEARS on PC. Those are straight up
ripped down to every polygon. These can't be used unless you want
Microsoft serving you a cease and desist letter or possibly actions
following such threats.

Thanks for the reply, However I have permission to use the models from Halo. I have asked 2 bungie employees (Evil Otto and RocketMoose) This is there message they replied back to me.

Evil Otto:

"You'll have to ask someone at Microsoft. They own the rights to Halo now.
From what I know, and this isn't official, fair rights allows you to use Halo assets to make fan creations as long as you aren't selling or gaining monetarily from their use."

RocketMoose:

"Hello ZeoWorks,
Microsoft owns the Halo IP, so I have no ability to give you permission in your project (not to mention I'm just a programmer, and not a buisness guy).

As a starting place, I'd look at Microsoft's Game Content Usage Rules (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Community/Developer/Rules ). They are primarily for machinima, and I'm not sure if they apply to fan-made games, but they at least give you a place to start looking.

Making your own games can be a ton of fun, and great portfolio material as well. My general advice is to keep it small, so you can have a complete and polished game. A small finished game is almost always more impressive than a big unfinished one. Finally, while fan-games can be really cool, they often come with lots of strange legal entanglements. If you can come up with an original game, it can be a lot simpler, and also super-satisfying when you are done - even if the premise is silly.
Good Luck!"

So I looked at that website and I have permission to use the models under Microsoft’s “Game Content Usage Rules.
Thank you for your interest!

From http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Community/Developer/Rules

How did you get these into fpsc? Because you -

"You can’t reverse engineer our games to access the assets or otherwise do things that the games don’t normally permit in order to create your Items. "

You also needed to post

[The title of your Item] was created under Microsoft’s “Game Content Usage Rules” using assets from [Name of the Microsoft Game], © Microsoft Corporation.

You also need to include a link to this page so people can find the Game Content Usage Rules.

This agreement seems more to me to mean that you can video tape your game play and other things and make fan-videos set to music and stuff like that. Stripping elements from the code seems to break this agreement as being reverse engineered. Unless the characters above where already direct.x format to begin with and you had to do nothing at all to convert them.

I personally would follow the thought if I have to ask then the answer is NO. I wouldn't be offended by what people said as I can see where you might have been confused, but I think this agreement is pretty clear.

I had permission to take the models and textures from Halo 1 PC.
I then used the models and rigged these players for you guys.

Meh, so the guy rigged some models from Halo. What's the big deal? It's not like if you download them Bill Gates is going to come to your house, have goons smash up your stuff and walk off with your favorite cereal. Relax, I think it'd be fun to do a halo fan game in FPSC.

It is a big deal, it's illegal, and it's being posted on a commercial forum that belongs to somebody else. This kind of attitude towards piracy is not accepted here.

Zeowolf, you have not been given permission to use the Halo models, modified or otherwise. The M$ license allows you to do lots of things, but reverse engineering to strip the assets is illegal. As has been said these are the original meshes, not a fan-made derivative.

To clarify, I've read the license and if you want to make a Halo fangame, you can. Just remember it has to stay free, can't be used to sell any other item or service, don't use illegaly sourced media and remember M$ can claim the rights to it at any time.

I understand.
I will update the topic saying everything the community needs to know if they wish to use these models.

You >>>cannot <<< distribute these models if they are, quote; "illegaly sourced media", as they seem to be. Doesn't matter what disclaimer you add for the communities' benefit; you are not allow to give these away to anyone.

If these are from the actual game, then you're breaking the rules.

ZeoWorks, if you post another link to the models which you have quite clearly been told is not tolerated, it will be enforced with a ban. This includes linking to another site which hosts the models.

Alright, as for my previous comment, I don't want everyone to think
that I was trying to cause anything. I was just pointing out the
obvious (why, I don't really know); furthermore, I was just giving a
heads up.

I want to make all this clear because I for one don't support any of
the trolling nor do I mean to look like I'm doing such. If I stepped
on anyone's toes, I'm sorry.

Pirating models is illegal. I personally wish companies would start taking immediate legal action against those that commit software piracy on a more regular basis to discourage the act in the future by making the consequences more known to other pirates out there, but until then, the best we can do is report such instances to BSA, Copynot, and so on.

For your reference;

Quote: "There are significant financial and legal penalties for software piracy. Illegal distribution and use of software can result in prison terms of up to five years, and felony charges with fines up to US$250,000. "

(I should make that my new signature around here to save me some time. )
