I am producing some videos and would like to use video clips with 3d characters called upon by human actors to explain technical concepts.
I've found done dedicated applications, but I don't think the quality and animation is adequate to hold viewer interest for longer periods of time.

My audience is 8th grade education level, but content for presentation is high to college level.

Animated characters I believe will be best for doing this work. The animated characters will take the serious aspect of learning the content to a better perception level for viewers.

This might not be a best way to do the work, that is... why I'm asking.

Hmm, are you wanting to add animated characters to video that you already have? Or something else?

you can use voodoo camera tracker http://www.digilab.uni-hannover.de/docs/manual.html

along with blender.... http://www.blender.org

both are free softwares
