Probably the best way to see the effects of lighting effects is to fill a scene with a few random objects, attach a light to the camera and move around the scene.

These are the least complex things about light... i try to think about something more difficult, but i can't other than this:

'set object light' switches off or on lights on an object
'set ambient light' sets the standard skylight's amount

This doesn't seem to be a topic begging for a tutorial...

The level editor I created lets you adjust all the object properties individually. I have a permanent light attached to the camera position. If you could import the objects into that then play with the options and see what effects they give.

Well, use an editor which is capable of your needs. If there is no option for something, that's not DBP's fault.
