Chaos Engine was on the PC aswell, what a sweet game. My fave was the Preacher.

This has "Fiasco" written all over it.

Hey Mirthin, I don't suppose you've still got it have you?
My favourite was the Navvie because his weapon was really upgradable.

I've still got my Amiga 1200 set up (keep saying to myself to sell it but never got round to it!) and I'm sure I've still got Chaos Engine. I'll look tonight after work. Can possibly use that transfer thingy you get with Amiga emulators to convert amiga disks to a format that the emulator uses. Or I could just find the Rom on the net somewhere.

I love it when a plan comes together

Winuae, the amiga enmulator can be found here:

http://www.winuae.net

The rom for chaos engine can be found here:

http://amiga.supergamez.hu/EngIntroSet.html

You also need to find on the net the kickstart rom image for the amiga.

Plays like a dream on my PC!

I was just checking out the Bitmaps webpage, anyone seen the info for Speedball Arena? - sounds bloomin great, sorta like a real sport with transfers, sponsorships etc - should be really cool.

Anyway, I never player chaos engine 2 - but is it just me, or are the graphics rubbish in comparison to the first one?

What do you guys reckon:

Chaos Engine 1

Chaos Engine 2

Surely that second screenshot must be from a different format or something or maybe a different developer? First one looks miles better. Remember playing it, was a fun two player game.

When I saw the graphics on Chaos Engine 2, I thought it was from a different developer too. The thing you could always count on with the Bitmaps games was superb graphics, I mean they were top of their league on the 16-bits. Now a great way to learn how to draw sprites is to get the graphics from games into paint packages for close inspection, and Chaos Engine, Cadavar, and Gods had a similar style. On the ST, you only had 15 colours plus a background colour, so the bitmaps would stipple, you can actually make out stippling on the first screenshot. They'd have 2 or 3 miscellaneous colours, and 2 smooth colour fades, like a steely blue and a flesh colour. This pallete would be fairly limited, but the bitmaps would mix these colours together using stippling to produce much more colours that you'd expect were possible.

Anyway, my point is - the second shot seems to have too many colours available, like they got sick of stippling and decided to just have 6 or 7 different colours. Also, the detail and artistic flair are missing - it actually looks like the graphics were drawn by a trainee or something.

yeah i know ya point Van... its kinda a shame becuase if you do take it and do a blend stripple using StdWindows Colours in PaintShop it actually smooths out the colours.

I'm always quite amazed at how some artists could use only 16 colours back then and create a good 150. Oki sometimes you could see it in the pixelation on the low resolution games of 320x215 but still was pretty cool
Alien Breeds were another that used it to a good effect, especially in AlienBreed 3D - they took 256colours for speed reasons and gave the user the same effect as 16bit - was cool

Me and a friend of mine strugled long until we got a fully working version so that we could play it through. We never even cheated. It was so great! I played the one with the orage rifle (player 2 in that shot) and my friend played the guy with the bazooka. We played CE for days and had a blast! ,:')

Van B: Got the Emulator and The Chaos Engine working but whoever translated it mucked up the main game. There's supposed to be music and a voice when you activate Nodes or pick up food/specials/power-ups.

Try the roms from the link I gave you above. ALL the sounds are there and plays and sounds exactly the same as original Amiga version.

The roms for chaos engine 2 are also there.

Just click on 'games' icon.

Yeah, I just downloaded those roms and they work perfectly.

I was disapointed that in CE2 you fight against each other instead of working together. I'm gonna play some more CE1 soon though. I noticed my skills are a bit rusty, it's been a long time since I played it ,:')

Deus,

Yeah, the ST version has really crappy sound, most ST games have. The only reason I prefer ST roms to Amiga roms is the ease of use.

I also found with UAE you have to faff around with display tab to get game to play properly, defaults to wrong resolution and plays squashed up.

Eeek, no Edit button! Anyways, I liked the new Speedball shots on their webpage, question is how the hell are we going to play it with these crappy PC joysticks? Or will it be mouse/keyboard controls on PC?!?

I seriously doubt they can mimic those accurate shots we used to do using Amiga joysticks ... heck the number of days I skived off college with friends just to play this game and SWOS .. haha.

Oops, hope some former tutor don't recognize me.
