i have a few questions about texturing?

#1 what software is the best and user friendly for texturing i am still learning? ps i do not know how to model i am using stock meshes and model pack meshes to learn?

#2 ok using entity workshop i have figured out how to apply a texture to a mesh how would i go about doing multiple textures. for example if i textured a shotgun the gun itself is black but the handle for the pump is brown wood how would i go about texturing the gun black and then adding the texture of the wood looking color to the pump handle. when i use entity workshop it will only let me apply 1 texture to the mesh so whatever i add the texture to it textures the whole entity and i do not have another option to add the second texture to the gun?

i am very new to this and i really want ot figure out how to texture any help would be much appreciated?

also i belive i have all the free apps and softwares available on fps creator for free do any of thoose work?

#1 - I would recommend either GIMP, or Paint.NET, try them both (both are free) and choose the one you like the most, I use Paint.NET.

#2 - UV mapping. After the model is finished you have to UV map it, UV mapping is the process of taking the model, and flattening it out.

After the model is unwrapped, you can add different colours to it, so it looks multi-textured, but really, it's all one 1 file.

There are lots of free programs that you can use to make models, Wings 3D, Anim8or, Blender. As well as payed ones, Milkshape, AC3D, 3ds Max (Note; the latter is a couple thousand dollars), personally, I use Anim8or (although, I do use Max at school)

There are also a few free programs for UV mapping, Wings 3D has it's own, and there's another free program called UV Mapper Classic, I would recommend it.

You can retexture a model directly in GIMP or whatever without putting it through a UV mapper, but you can do that if you want a fresh UV map.

As for your problem, go to Edit > New UV Map > Box (or whatever your model calls for)

Then edit from there.

Here is a small tip from an email I sent recently...

Quote: "One tip I have for you is to make sure you properly group your model into its according sections/ parts. This will save hours of frustration while UV Mapping and will also make it a LOT easier for anyone retexturing "

Remembering that tip will drastically improve the quality of your models Good luck and hope to see some models from you int he near future

Cheers,
Anayar

P.S: I use Milkshape, Blender, Mudbox, Fragmotion, GIMP, and UVMapper Classic

Good tip! When you're making your model, think ahead about how you're going to lay out the UV Map and how it will be textured. This takes some time and experience to get right.

The only program I didn't see mentioned that I use is LithUnwrap, very similar to UV Mapper Classic and there is a great tutorial on YouTube to get you going.

If you want to findout the best way to make your texture for whatever you are modeling, I found the best tutorial for that. Go to Youtube and type in Iamgamerx or type in BLENDER TO FPSC he has a real good tutorial on UV Mapping and Texturing, he only uses FREE software. BLENDER and PAINT.NET for his tutorials. Good luck and be patient it takes time to learn but once you figure it out its not all that hard. And trust me for Gods sake don't ever merge someone elses work to yours it will just give you hardaches.

I had the same question for texturing. As for modeling, people will say this sucks, but I use Google Sketchup. It's not that good but i use it to make small models for my games such as chairs. I wouldn't recommend it for any highly detailed model but it's way easier to use if you just want to make something small, plus you don't need to UV map the model for texturing

I used to use sketchup. One of the problems with sketchup is that it uses multiple textures. If you want to use multiple textures the model needs to be dynamic, so takes more of a toll on the engine. Also, sketchup models have strange collision properties.
When you can, buy Milkshape. It's just as easy to model and UV mapping with Lithunwrap is almost perfect.

I have discovered DeepMesh which seems to have a lot of potential.
