tried with several of the scifi health entities but can't pick them up to change health variable

I checked and Mani Script is pickuphealth.fpi

picking up a key seems to work though

Have you lost health before trying to pick the health up? i.e. is you health below 500 before you try to add health? If i understand correctly, the health parameter will not increase if you are at the maximum.

I tried it at 500 and then with a start of 50. Script seems to add 50 but no effect and health item doesn't disappear or react when I run into it

The script isn't going to increase your maximum health value, which is what you're essentially trying to do now. Add a hurt zone to your level, let it drop your health a few points, and then you should be able to pick up the health. The health items fill up any lost health, but will not give you anything over your starting amount; which is why you need to take damage first, before you can pick up health.
