I registered Milkshape two days ago, and got the code yesterday. I downloaded V 1.70 Beta and put the code in. It says to restart Milkshape, so I did. Then is says to keep it running for at least 2 minutes. I do that, but it won't work! Maybe it is because it is a Beta version, so I am downloading V1.66 now, hopefully it will work. Anybody else with this problem?

This is a notorious problem with Milkshape. If you have had a demo on your computer which has expired, then this problem arises.

There are several comments on the Milkshape forums which explain this, however I don't think that they work.

However, the point is made of running Milkshape for two minutes. This is running, but not DOING anything with it. Just let the program sit there. Give it the desired several minutes, close it, and restart it. If this doesn't work, try reregistering the program, and repeating. If THIS doesn't work, then contact the writer (Mete I believe) and ask him for advice, AFTER reading all the messages on their forum with regard to this problem. After all he is the only one who is able to fix this.

This is the thread from the Milkshape forum. Or at least one of them.

had a bit of a prob with this myself.

A bit of uninstalling/reinstalling seemed to do the trick.

Uninstalling and reinstalling don't ALWAYS do the trick. Not with Milkshape anyway. The author is very careful about his software. If you have a register monitoring program running, then Milkshape refuses to run, the author is after all protecting his work.

There have been several cracks released, a few French websites explain how to crack the program using a debugging tools, users have been known to release their serial numbers to 'friends', all of which means that the author changes his method of protection regularly. I had a fairly early version of the prog which was defeated by using regedit and once every 30 days changing a known key. These registry entries are the backbone of his protection, but the names are different.

If anyone has legally bought this program and has this problem, then it is my understanding that an email to Mete containing all pertinent information will solve the mess. Mete (so is my understanding) will then send a .reg file which removes the registry keys left behind by Milkshape, allowing a new virgin install.

Now I am not condoning piracy, theft or whatever, Mete works hard on his product which fulfills a need within the gaming community, and would almost certainly have bought it (if I didn't already own Amapi, Cinema 4d, Life Forms and several other packages) had he made it possible via PayPal, BUT if someone out there has one of these .reg files I wouldn't mind seeing it in my mailbox.

Not because I condone piracy, but because I cannot check out whether the new version of the program does what I want it to do, because I had an older version on my computer that did't.

I would have liked to have seen a new install check whether it was a serious update (and only the author knows whether there has been a serious update) and if so allow a further 30 days of use.

Thereafter checking for a new installation and bottling out after 30 days of use. The install procedure could just leave the original registry keys in place, to thwart the reinstallation of older versions over newer versions (since the earlier versions would still see their registry keys and as such cease working).

In all this diatribe perhaps I have lost the meaning of what I wanted to say, it's been a long day and I haven't had as much sleep as I would have liked, but perhaps this example would be sufficient.

Imagine Milkshape v1.0.0, a much touted modeller for the gaming community. I download it, install it, give it a whirl, but find that it cannot yet import/save/export/support the format that I am using (hell let's even use Directx .x format). OK I don't need the program on my computer because it doesn't do what I want, so I uninstall it. Months pass and I learn that not only can version 1.5.9 import/save/export/support the format that I am using , but you can also do ANIMATION in this format as well. HELL lets download the beast and see if it does what it says, this looks interesting. BAM I cannot use the program because of that first installation so many moons ago. I would like to give it a whirl, but its own defence prevents me. Shame, I would have liked to have seen how it stacked up now, but it won't let me. Obviously this support of the new format and animation is a major upgrade to the program, and so the installation should be allowed, and I should get my thirty days to check it out. HOWEVER this new installation adds several newer keys to the registry, so that only a newer MAJOR upgrade can be used without limits for 30 days. Any other minor upgrades simply don't, and act (as they should) as an expired trial.

I think that this method would have the benefits of both worlds, allowing possible customers to really check the program out and also allowing Mete to protect his time and hard work.

Wow, Ninja. This is the first time that I ever saw you post. What a post

Thanks for the info. I downloaded the newest Non-Beta version, and the registration works fine. I am happy.

However, now I have another problem. This does not have to do with registering, but I thought I might as well throw it in here, since I started the thread anyway.

My objects won't show up in my game! I tried both .x exporters with multiple settings, but I can't get it to work. Does anyone else have this problem? Maybe I need to download a different .x exporter.

Others have had problems with the exporters, and you may be advised to search a little on the forums,http://darkbasicpro.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=12337&b=3 is one I found that may be related to your problem.

The thread seems to indicate a preference for the use of a Microsoft program.http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/dx-exp/8.1/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DX81SDK_extras_Direct3D.exe Good grief what is the world coming to???

NinjaNL,
What is that program? Is there a link to read about it, before I download it?

I thought that Whistler was the code name for WinXP.

It contains code and utilities.

Several exporters for 3dsMax,[versions 3 and 4 (probably work on 5 also, you'll have to take a chance on that)].

Aslo exporters for Maya 2.5, 3 and 4.

Also Conv3d utility, with some readme's and code for the exporters (I think) a small + 1.5 MB download.
