i want to get into character modelling and/or object modelling but i don't know what software to get for the modeling and the rigging (if a software could do both would be an added bonus).
I've heard of: ZBrush, 3DS Max, Maya, Mudbox, Cinema 4d.
At first i was thinking about getting Zbrush for the modelling and then inmporting into Cinema 4D for some added detail and for the rigging and animations but i think this method is more for movies etc.
Price is a factor and i know that Max and Maya are uber expensive but if they are worth the money i may consider saving up for a while.
Any help will be appreciated

If you want some thing really easy to learn with, while still producing quality models, get Milkshape.

^ They ^ say get milkshape, I say Blender.

Either way, you should actually try the different modeling programs through trials\demos or if they are free just get it and try it out. Then find the one you are most comfortable with and stick to it. There is a extensive set of tutorials for the various programs if you take the time look for them.

For a longer list check this thread out http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=154983&b=3

Oh wait, you said to buy. Nevermind

And Zbrush is a sculpting program. You'll still need to pick a modeling software if you're planning on making game models

3ds max is not that much money if you know where to buy it or look for good deals on it, I would go with 3ds max. Look every where for a used coppy. Alot of people dont use it any longer and are looking to sell there packeged coppy for a cheap price. Look online for used 3ds max for sell. You can go onto many diffrent sites online and you will bid on it and if you are the higest bidder then you win that coppy of 3ds max for that price. Trust me, this is the best way to buy it for cheap,Im talking around 10 to 20 dollars. You might have to pay for shipping but in the end its all worth it.You will end up with the box, cds, instructions and all. I hope this helped.

here is a link of one here, enjoy

ps, Its all leagle to sell your coppy of any product as long as you dont use it on your pc.

and for 2011

http://www.ioffer.com/i/autodesk-3ds-max-design-2011-full-98511253

EDIT::: a LITTLE BIT OF WARNING HERE, IF YOU GO TO A SITE THAT OFFERS 3DS MAX AS A DOWNLOAD AFTER YOU BUY IT OTHER THEN 3DS MAX WEB SITE, ITS A SCAM, DONT BUY IT, MAKE SHURE YOU ARE ON A AUCTION SITE AND THEY SHIP OUT THE PRODUCT TO YOU.

Im not shure why? As If you buy a used car its half off and even sometimes only a couple hundred dollors. Its not diffrent, when you buy anything, no matter what it is, you are allowed to resell that item. I have sold things on auction sites like thease myself,There is nothing wrong with it at all. Also You have to remember when you buy something on the net, no matter who is selling it, if it is shipped out to you its almost always legit.

Alot of people get the resell rights to resell 3ds max as a new product, then they get all the new copys of it, then cant sell them. so they open them and take them out of the package to to say they have been used so they can get rid of inventory at a leagle low price.

Just for kicks I went to E-Bay and looked for 3dsMax. There is someone selling a "Brand New, unopened" package of 2011 Student Version. The further down in his description he states...

I don't send out the DVD because it takes too long to reach my customers. After the purchase, I will send you the registration code and you can download the trial version from the manufacturer. Once you enter the code I give you, you will enjoy all of the benefits of the full version.

Gotta love these guys. But yeah, you can find used copies at a very reasonable price. As Dan said, make sure they ship the original package and disk.

Brian.

a few years back the supreme court had made a ruling about how if you buy a a copy of 3d max, autocad etc. Then you used to get 5 seats. (paying the $7500 there abouts). What the court ruled was that you paid for 5 seats and could sell as many of those seats as you liked beacuse you paid for 5. I don't know if Autodesk has changed how they sell the seats as we are on a subscription plan at work and I have not looked at it for a while. But according to the AUGI newsletter from that time, it is legal to sell the copies as long as you are not on a subscription. Subscription licenses expire when you install the new version.

p.s. he's SELLING the student version?!? It's freaking free!!

I know, its a little scary in this day and age to buy softwhere like this online but if you want it cheep some times you have to try it out to see how it works out. If it does not then all you loose is $30 but if you dont have the extra $30 dont try it. I had no idea what would happen before I bought fpsc. But I tryed it and Latter on I got it in the mail. I had no idea who fpsc was 5 years ago, to me as far as I knew the whole company could have been a scam.

What that said thease sites are not big corps like fpsc so make shure they are at least affiliated.

I found that while milkshape 3d is great, it gets you into some pretty bad modeling habits.

Zwarte Piet, nice to see you!
Simply speaking, and it appears you can afford these, the best modeling packages are 3d Studio Max, or Maya. There are MANY other softwares out there, and many of them are very good, but those two have not yet been beaten.

Truespace is very easy and quite powerful, but the interface, IMO, is horrible. It depends on the type of modeler you are whether you love it or hate it.
