Hello,
I know that D and D2 are the models themselves correct? but S means specular map, what is that? and how do I make one for my model? also, I don't understand what the N means. How would I go about making one of those for my model aswell?

Do I need a N and S map? what are the advantages to have one?

Thank you for reading this. Keep in mind that I am still a noob in modelling though.

Well I'll try to take some questions out. Ok, N means Normal Map, I think the maps will help because of shaders.

_D2/_D maps are diffuse, these are for the base texture.
_N maps are normal maps, these simulate bumps on a flat surface without changing geometry.
_S maps are secularity maps, these are for controlling how shiny a part of a texture is.

Some shaders use _I instead of _S (mainly bond1's shaders), and the phong_bump_specular shader uses _R (used in bumpcubereflectalpha for controlling how reflective a part of a texture is)

I hope you understand

[edit]also, welcome to the forums

Thank you and Im glad you solved my questions!
Although what programs allow me to make the Normal maps and Specular maps?

Thanks again,

There is a plugin for photoshop as well as gimp and paint.net for _N maps, alternatively you can use crazybump but you have to pay. For _S maps you can search google or make a high-contrast gray scale/black and white copy of the texture (un-professional and the results might be unsatisfying, however it is very quick).

Hope this helps!!

Thanks Dark Frager

EDIT: ok I have been doing some testing by retexturing guns and stuff but I have another question... What tells the model to use the Normal map,Specular map, D and D2 map? I tried the .FPE file but it only lists the D or D2 texture... I also want to make my models use a S and N map but I don't know how to apply it to the model.

Any idea how I can achieve this?

Just do this for all the maps and textures: Name your specular and normal map files the same as the name of the D and D2 texture and put _S, or _N at the end of the file name (no spaces) according to the map.

The shader tells it what to use. If you have DarkShader use that to control what textures are applied.

All browsers should come with compulsory spell checks.

Here's what a models fpe should look like if you want the N and S applied. The fpe is from a computer model I've made, and I've set the effect as the standard bump shader

Hope it helps
