I've done a fair amount of searching, but I don't think I'm using the right terminology in the search.

I need to put an image on the terrain that follows the cursor and conforms to the shape of the terrain, such as those you see in a terrain editor or the little circles you see in an RTS.

Evolved has an example in his Advanced Lighting library called "Edit Terrain" which is a basic terrain editor. It has the feature you're looking for.
