I know normal ghosting makes objects so that the darker they are, the more transparent they are, but I'm not quite sure what negative alphablending/ghosting does, it seems to behave quite weirdly. Anyone have an answer?

Well, thats kind of it I think, except the white is most transparent when the colour is (127,127,127), ie. half black, half white. Also when you fade ghosted objects to 0, they disappear, whereas negative ghosted objects become more solid, which is annoying as I need black smoke that fades away. I could use set alpha mapping but it isn't as fast.

Why not use positive ghosting with dark smoke against a black background that fades into black then?
