Hello,

Ive been working with fps creator and many programming languages and also game console like programming. I was thinking, "would it be possible to get enough people to build a gaming console just for fps creator games?" I figured ya sure it was and turned here to the forums and all its great people.

My idea for the gaming console would be to be a simple cd/dvd loader with a dashboard/main menu for options. The fps creator games would be ran off of the discs or a flash drive.

Any suggestions?

When you consider that FPS Creator games will only run on a Windows platform, your console would be quite expensive. Kind of like a computer.

Well, let's see here. I think this is a great idea, but I'm not sure how realistic it is.

For a console, you'd need a few parts to consider. First, the components.

Custom Motherboard - $80
CPU - $120
GPU - $100
4 GB RAM - $40
Hard Drive for OS - $30 (I don't think they make them 2GB nowadays)
CD/DVD Drive - $20
Custom Casing - $20

These minimalistic parts add up to over $400. You can't offer something like this for a console that runs games from a single game engine. Companies like Microsoft and Sony actually lose money off of each console they sell, but they make up that revenue through their games, media distribution, and purchasing sources like Xbox Live. For each console you'd make, you'd lose a substantial amount of money because of the lack of media and content variety.

Secondly, and I'm not totally sure of this, but I doubt there's more than a few thousand people who own FPSC. That small of a user base would limit sales and the general popularity of your console. I think it's best we just stick with PC's. A couple month's ago I started a thread about making an official FPSC development and gaming PC for $499, but that didn't come to fruition for lack of support. The reason my idea could have worked is because it was a PC, so there were the infinite multitude of other things you could do with the computer other than FPSC, making it invaluable for its low price.

Don't get me wrong, your idea was fantastic and it really made me think. I imagined myself having an FPSC console, and I must say, I liked the idea of it. But everything that makes FPSC so...homely is its custom media, mods, and forums, all of which sadly can't really be incorporated to a single platform of a console.

I don't think this would be completely out of the question.

To bring up the obvious issues:
1. a computer already does this. However with the fact that the end user needs the correct version of direct x9, a dedicated hardware profile would solve the issue. This would also take on dedicated servers, updates, etc.
2. Marketing a unit that only runs one engine would be a tough sell for higher developers, EA, Infinity Ward, etc. If I was going to spend a couple hundred bucks I would want it to cover all games coming out, Call of Duty, Ghost Recon (if Ubisoft ever releases it), etc.
3. A code modification to the engine would be required so you didn't have to install full windows on the unit as the end user would never run a quarter of it.
4. A portable device, with the upcoming AppGameKit, might be a more realistic approach.

These are all just my opinions and I would like to see where this goes...

While it sounds like a good idea, it dosen't sound realistic.

We do however have a xbox option, but i honestly do not know how to get it onto the xbox console...

If you are able to pull it off, it would be neat!

So it couldn't be done even if i had all the parts and currently working on a working operating system for the program? Well im still glad everybody likes this idea, but im sure it could be pulled off. Just imagine how much more people would want to be more active with fps creator to have there game out circulated in game stores or on different online stores for a new console it runs on. People could also make there own games with this console, what im saying is its good for the community of fps creator and good for the whole game creators business. They will be making money off of it. Everybody wins if everybody helps. The xbox idea is also a good idea but we need a xbox 360 and it needs to be modded with ur specific mod in order to run fps creator games. An xbox is like a computer, it runs off its own version of windows and works with cds/dvds in the process as a game console. I will start a new post on xbox possibilities.

If you truly wanted to make your own OS it would have to be written in Assembly code.

here's my suggestions.

- stay with PC.
- Build it off of linux and modify it to your liking.

if you want a motherboard that loads up fast than get the one that the "Open Pandora" was based on. If I'm right they have no BIOs and stuff they are quite advance. Little time for booting only. If you go into it your pretty much won't be able to use dx and stuck with Open GL ES. Well hope this link helps you a bit.

Yay! Someone else know about that! XD

I think that we could manage to make it less than $300, the console itself. Then maybe sell games for 10-20? I think it would be very cool! I know everyone is like, well pc's can play the games fine, that's true but thats the same thing with xbox for me. I sometimes want to play it, but sometimes i want to be on my computer playing a game. Im sorry if that doesn't make sense, it did in my mind

But if the console was ever made, i think games would have to be a lot more high quality than most are on these forums. IM NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN, my games aren't very good and i know that. But if you were to make the console, and sell the games, i would like them to be worth playing! Like more than 3 levels, but this is just my opinion.

Great idea Dracware! Thanks for sharing! I wish you luck on the OS and such!
