I was thinking about making a multiplayer type game(not an mmorpg).
But I think I have encounterd this problem, how will cheating be prevented?

By making all the player make a vow that they will not cheat under any circumstances, no matter how dire the situation.

thats the nature of the beast. people will always find ways to exploit the rules regardless of how much time and effort you try to prevent it.

If you have beta testers of this mindset who can regurgitate the problems to you, then you may be able to find ways to circumvent the more problematic exploits.

1) You can't store any info on the players computer, all must be on your servers.
2) All items that can be aquired or used in the game you need to store thier data on the server so it can't be edited.
3) You need to have a call control on all server request, so players can't request items at will though open doors in server access.
and it just goes on and on and .......

if you look at diablo 2, ultima, or everquest, you will find a almost secure game network, but even these systems with millons of dollars pumped in to them still get hacked for cheats.
