After designing a level for a small military game (3 lvls), I've thought about restructuring it into a sniper game. With that thought I searched around for a completed sniper game or threads on a sniper game dev. -- not much there.

Has anyone tried to create (or finished) a sniper game?

Any thoughts, ideas, or experiences would be invaluable!

What exactly do you mean by a sniper game? As in your a sniper in the distance and you have to find and shoot the right guy, and if you don't you fail? That actually sounds like a good idea... If that is your idea i won't steal it of course! But good job in thinking of that if that's what your thinking of

Well, it's not stealing! I see ownership in story and execution... not game type.

But yes... a game about "one shot, one kill." I'm a big fan of SNIPER ELITE.

That's true, well im working on a game right now but maybe i will try this after i finish my current game. I liked those types of games as well, you should go for it! It has good potential, and is definitely possible in FPSC!

Erm...not really.
You are going to need HUGE levels for a decent sniper game.
Good luck making that run decently.

Making someone's day a little better because of one of my models means a lot to me.

Not exactly... I made a level like this a few months ago It is indeed possible with some tricks here and there.

I would however recommend to add 1 or 2 sniper levels and make the rest of the game a default military shooter

Yea i don't think that you will need huge map to pull that sort of thing off. And thats a great idea Wolf! It would have that COD feeling i guess, which i don't really like that much but a lot of people do. Thanks for the idea!

@ Wolf If I might ask, how did you deal with the sniper levels? Did you add elements like steadying aim/stop breathing?

Sniper games are probably one of those easiest achievable with FPSC, because the targets need no complicated AI or pathfinding and you can easily create maps with very limited "action space" for the player - like a rooftop on which the player stalks around to find the best firing positions and a winzone at the emergency stair entrance.

Some tailored victory condition and timer scripts are necessary but thats not such big deal with 1.18.

@ The Storyteller 01 Thanks for your thoughts. You have much more experience, but we are thinking along the same lines.

Yes, the AI issue (and the ability to make a level with few enemies) is exactly the reason I initially got interested in a sniper game (or at least sniper levels). In essence, it's an update of the old shooting gallery games.

With that said, I want to create some consequences for mission success and failure. I'm thinking in broad strokes with 3 levels...

1. INFIL -- finding weapon and getting into position
2. MISSION OBJECTIVE -- timed sniper level
3. EXFIL -- the escape (one level if you succeeded at objective and another level if you failed)

But it could be done even more simply.

I also liked the idea of a large-looking level which in actuality has a very small playable area for FPS reasons.

I tried my hand at this a few months ago. It actually turned out quite well, and I didnt even use any scripts or enhancements. The only hard part is balancing the AI so theyre not unrealistically stupid or unrealistically smart. Id shoot one guy off in a corner and the entire group of enemies would notice me. Its definitely a good idea though.

@ NinjaKillwer No scripts? Wow. If I might ask, did you use custom weapons or EAI, JFletcher...? Just wondering.

Yes, staying hidden from enemies might take some crafting.

EAI has one sniper in Model Pack 10. Maybe 9 not sure. The better ones are on his GC Store account though.

Yes, I've looked over his work -- great stuff. What sold you on his work for your sniper game? Yes, I'm extremely particular when choosing assets for a game -- maybe too particular. *edit* Ok, I just watched videos on EAI's sniper rifles. Enough said.

I've been thinking about the issue you brought up about enemies locating you after a kill -- inability to stay stealth. That's the time for scripting.

Although I expect less enemy AI, sniper "condition" scripting will certainly take up the slack -- heart rate, steadying shot, breathing, etc. Will have to sort through the mods to see what aids best.

Seems GeneralPowell00 had a sniper WIP a few years back: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=119257&b=25

Would love to pick his brain!
