Newcomers DBPro Corner / FoFiX Conversion question

How do you make a music game like "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero" with Dark Basic Professional, because the only other alliterative is Frets On Fire, which is a good open source, but after you've been playing it for a while it slows down and some of the songs don't work because people say it's done and the fretting doesn't keep pace with the song or they used the built in fretter where they just press "Spacebar" and try to play along with it, but it never works so I come up with an idea to make a remake of FoFiX or the original FoF, and make a better one with source code all I need is some kind of translator for python and openGl code to Dark Basic Professional. If anyone has something like that I would be extremely grateful if you could send it to me, if you do I could put your name in the credits.

There's very little point in trying to 'converting' the code, as it's highly unlikely to produce a better result. The only viable way forward would to be write it from scratch.

So just look at the code and try copy it into Dark Basic Pro code and make it better to put it simply right, and also I know the basic code for DBPro, but is there anything special about the code that I need to know about because I want to know about all the problems I might run into making this type of game that way I can make an informed decision on whether or not to continue with a remake or try and make a better version from scratch. I just thought that if I translated the code it would be easier to start making the game, cause I really want to make an RPG Music game which would be like RB and GH, but the player would get to see what it like to be a famous musician, from getting signed to the top of the music world.

Learning a new language takes time and patience. If I were to try and explain every nuance of DBP it would take a very very long time. My advice would be:

1-Write it from scratch. You will never understand someone elses code well enough to 'translate' it properly even if it is fairly well commented. Trust me, I edit / update / enhance 20 year old code every day!

2-Take it one step at a time. Start your game with something simple and build it up. It will come together quicker than you might think.

3-Ask advice on the forums. When you have some code that doesn't work and you don't know why post a question here and someone will always help. Don't ask for code without showing what you've already tried as this just annoys people.

Your website gave me a headache

So from what I've seen from you (your website, and your other 3 posts that have been locked because you didn't follow the rules), you want to convert an open source game to DBP and sell it. wow. Well good luck with the conversion, lol

I suggest learning Dark BASIC before you attempt a game like this... I've been programming DBP for 5 years now, and I don't even know if I could create a game like FoF... If you click my sig, you'll see my current project I'm working on. And I'll admit, it's far from finished... I mean, I don't even have the basic fighting system working yet, and it's been a full 1.5 years of developement. So start simple with a game like pong or space invaders, post questions on the forums, get to know the language. And when you've shown that you can stick to a project for more than a year (which is damn hard, because you lose motivation after 2 months or so), you're ready to create your FoFiX (confusing name BTW).

But before doing that, please learn how to form your sentences, because they are written with poor grammar and are formed in a boring way and, as mentioned above, give me a headache.

Now it may seem that I've been harsh to you, and that you are now viewed as a stoopid newb, but in reality I and all other forum members will fully support you if you get with the program and learn this language, and don't post any more of these threads requesting a team to convert a game for you to sell.

I'm more than willing to give you as much help as I can as long as I see some effort and progress on your own part.

I have to agree with 95% of TheComet's comments but poor grammar is not something I worry about on these forums unless I can't understand what you are saying., just be respectful and put some work in.

Agreed, it wasn't entirely suitable to talk about your poor grammer, we all make mistakes, and there are a lot of non-English people on this forum struggling to make a half-way understandable sentence

Let's not forget about that full stop he failed to put at the end of his sentence (unless it's that big yellow thing poking its tongue out).

Back on topic, do what TheComet suggested and learn DBPro, gain experience using it on smaller projects and then tackle FoF. A lot of the forum users see newcomers attempt to tackle large projects before they have learn't sufficient programming skills, get stuck and then give up. We are just trying to save you the time.

Yeah, just learn dbPro, it will lead to better things anyway. Besides, you can't just convert a program written in Python using OpenGL to a program in BASIC using DirectX, they are two differant languages and two differant graphics API's

I want to thank you all for the advice and will take it to heart. On another note that would be the reason I asked the question on this type of game.

The game itself is still in the planing stage of the process because where I want to take it and sell it I have to decide what songs will be in the game for players to play along to. The other game I want to create would be a game like Tribal Wars, but instead of an online RTS as they call it I want to do something like an FPS or an MMOFPS.

I have a lot of ideas for games, but at the moment they're all hard ~that's what she said~ sorry had to add that in anyway back on topic so I'll probably just do a Pac-man style game seems easy to do for some like me, plus it will help me get my name out there too.
