That's great! I'm borrowing a book from my dad called "C++ Coding Standards", and it kinda says "Most importantly, avoid premature optimization because it only obfuscates code, however avoid premature pessimization". It didn't take that as far as to say that applies to data structures, but that's certainly a great view if you're worrying about how practical it is to write the code, as well as how fast it is, and how little memory it uses.
