¶ I looked everywhere I could think of. Look, I'm not complaining; I'm just explaining where I am so someone might be able to tell me REALLY where to start.

¶ Okay. Been a gamer, shooter, for a number of years. Started coding ETC before that, so I know creating a shooter isn't like waving a magic wand, as easy and quick as that...BUT...I'm certain I do NOT appreciate the more-than-deceptive tag that got me to BUY this thing: No programming knowledge necessary! Anybody can do it! It's not true. AT ALL.

¶ All right, I downloaded and began to read the official unofficial guide, the bible, so to speak. Started out well, but then became evident that it was NOT structured, for instance, like a textbook, giving you a concept to start with, build a really primitive SOMETHING, expand on the simple concepts, and then the NEXT needed concept...nah, you'll be reading forever if you expect that. I'm still waiting for the "easy peasy" part.

¶ I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how to start learning to use this application. Not only can I not even paint a friggin' COBBLESTONE, I have no idea how to put one on the street! Cripes, I don't even know where the accursed street IS! That infernal grid DOES NOT remain entirely visible, and when part of it goes offscreen, THERE ARE NO SCROLL BARS--you can't see what went offscreen unless you pull back...and then you're where you started, too far away, not close to see detail, so you zoom in, lose it off the screen...see my confusion? This is what I get (3 screenshots attached in one JPEG)....

¶ The fellow who wrote the guide put some very useful information, I'm sure. Now that you've heard me whine (and now you've seen that attached screenshot mess), perhaps you can tell me where might be what I'm looking for. I don't want to hear, "go to school." I've BEEN to school, and did very well there, thank you very much. The developer of this program advertises that you don't need programming knowledge or skills to create shooters...if you buy its wonderful application! Well, I HAVE such knowledge and skills (albeit in a different arena/genre), and IT'S NOT HELPING A BIT. Could someone please tell me: How do I create ONE ROOM with ONE DOOR and ONE PERSON? Could one possibly start out more simply than that? Is there a way that doesn't involve two years of study before I even START building my first shooter? Really? There has to be someone out there who can show me from "even a complete congenital idiot can do it!" to "Why am I reading about scripts, comments, remarks and the like if...I DON'T NEED TO KNOW THIS [to get started]?" Perhaps I could get truly acerbic, wryly witty, et cetera, et cetera. Man, it's like an old Loony Tunes skit with a crossing guard and a stupid, little-boy-me:

CROSSING GUARD: Hey, kid! You don't need me--it's easy! Just cross the street by yourself!
STUPID: Really?
CROSSING GUARD: Yeah--really, and all it'll cost you is this week's lunch money.
STUPID: Wow! Great! Here ya go!
CROSSING GUARD: Have fun crossing the street....
STUPID: (walk-walk-walk-SPLAT!) (Idiot flattened by steamroller)
CROSSING GUARD: I hated that snotty brat....

I'm sure I'd be very happy if someone could advise me of some elementary tutorials...I just hate Getting Started stuff that doesn't tell you HOW TO START.

You dont really 'paint' in FPSC, you select segments and place them where you want them, which you know how to do already.

Quote: "That infernal grid DOES NOT remain entirely visible, and when part of it goes offscreen, THERE ARE NO SCROLL BARS--you can't see what went offscreen unless you pull back"

Use the arrow keys to move around the grid. If you want to zoom in more right click on an entity when editing entities.

It looks from your screenshots that you already know how to do this, press the green button in the upper right of the editor to test your level.

All browsers should come with compulsory spell checks.

Wow, dude what have you been smoking? Wheel Acid?

Calm down dear, it's just a commercial!

Ok, after reading that and seeing the screenshots (which I first off must admit that I frowned when I saw UTorrent lol but that's my own opinion.

Now onto FPSC. I seriously cannot comprehend how there could be such an issue... in the above 'prefabs' which you've dropped in, you place your 'Start Marker', drop in a 'Character' from the 'Entities' catalogue and test the level.

I can understand the scripting side / retexturing / modelling maybe difficult for some, but with regards to the editor itself?

You say you are an 'expert' in other 'genres/areas' what would they be out of interest? Because, without sounding derogatory, this editor is used by my 6 year old son and I am not joking!

You need to format your thread's post a bit more and not beat around the bush as much it's too confusing for anyone to read.

I wish you the best of luck on getting to grips with the editor.

Very True.

I linked to my tutorial in your other thread as well. I understand. New stuff can be frustrating. I tried to make this as plain and straight forward as possible. Don't give up, it's the worst thing you can do.http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=177710&b=21

I see you also read the community guide, which is good, but I would have started with the manual located in the documents folder:

program files/the game creators/fps creator/docs.

Well..you can make a game without programming knowledge...thats true.

It just never sayd that you can make exactly what you want without programming knowledge...so: Room, enemies, guns -> yes

anything more is making it a little more complicated. But scripting in the FPI language is far from rocketscience.

Hmm...explaining where exactly you encounter problems would help.
I fear there is no easy peasy part.

Yeah...I don't get it. Okay... If you have never worked with 3d applications, you might get problems but the navigation is the easiest you can imagine:

Mousewheel: Zoom in and out
Arrowkeys: move around

You can increase your rendershrout (visible place) by clicking on the relevant button (colorfoul images right below the typical menue (files etc.). You cant miss it.

Thats true...you dont need to know this to get started...in fact, I didn't mess with that the whole first 2 years I had FPSC....you just place the stuff from your library in your editor. And you get a first person shooter...just like the box describes.

Now, I think you search too far. Controling the interface is perfectly simple...just dont try to look for buttons that are not there or not necessary for a beginner. FPSC behaves like most windows tool... if you where using an other OS before that might be the problem aswell....

However, reading the manual right here:

"program files/the game creators/fps creator/docs. "

gets you started.

I would also recommend upgrading to version 1.18 which can be found here: http://files.thegamecreators.com/fpscreator/FPSCreator_Upgrade_118.zip

This thread was a joke right?

I could make a map in FPSC before I figured out how to put quote tags around words in this forum when posting a message.

I got a headache just by reading the first post..

It's really not that hard to use FPSC. There are video tutorials out there that show you how to use the software, so you dont have to worry about reading anything. Take a little time to understand the software a little before going off on one and making yourself look like a loony!

At least you know how to code...lol...I am still learning how to script in FPSC.

But guess what?

I almost have a fully functioning 4 level game completed.

So, is FPSC easy?

Yes.

But it's like everything else. You have to play around with it FIRST before you can get the hang of it.

Keep at it. I bet your next post will be a WIP...

GAME ON!!!

dont start with the unofficial user-guide, start reading the official manual.^^

many simple hints and it also describes how to build a level on the first 5 pages.

you can easily build a normal, easy-content shooter within 30 minutes out of the vanilla-fpsc. yes, this would not be your game as its in your mind, but it will be a playable level where you can have fun.

when you want to build up the pictures in your head, you have to learn many things or get help by someone who knows the needed things. levelbuild, scripting, meshing, animation, texturing, sounddesign, musicdesign, storytelling etc.etc...

do you think that you can get a program to do all this? i dont think so. build zombie/scifi-levels and have fun, or start learning all the neccessaries to get the pictures from mind onto screen. but dont think this would be done in hours, days or month.

look at the great works of WOLF for example. he works for 5! (?) years on fpsc now, and i´m sure he has a lot to learn also nowadays to get exactly what he wants.

Come on man.

FPSC is easiest tool in the world than game maker. So if you dont like FPSC,just use UDK or Unity 3D.you will know UDK and Unity is hard than FPSC.FPSC only used your mouse, your keyboard and creativity.FPSC is not the tool to created next Half Life,Left 4 Dead and many more.Yes we can create the game without programming languages in FPSC.As you can see Wolf game is the best ever.So do you think only Wolf,Bugsy or maybe Starmind are only good?.No,we all good but we must training. All people who used FPSC for the first time are so noob but how they manage to be good and become reknown?.Because all of their hardwork. So can you all think?.What happen if TGC not creating FPSC?.If TGC not create this tools,we never see games from Wolf,Bugsy and many more.I admit my design is not the best but we can try to improve ourselves!.So we cannot show that FPSC is weak or bad.We must show them what FPSC user can do with this tool!.Iam now making the level design tutorial and it will be free.I will send it to you if you want.

oh, i forgot:

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2001&page=files

dont know why, but hard to find for me first time.

upgrade versions, FPS Creator Entity Maker for modelmaking, Segment Editor,...

EDIT: when upgrade installed, take a look at the videos and samplemaps in your fpsc-folders. with reading the manual out of the docs-folder, everything is a lot easier after that
