This is probably a stupid mistake I'm making, but for some reason using the following results in 0 (false) being printed

Your snippet works fine for me, it both a) produces a file called 1_0.arr and b) reports 1 at the end.

The only thing I can think of is you are trying to write the file somewhere where you don't have permission to save.
