What is the best way to make a game like RB- Rock Band and GH- Guitar Hero in DBPRO. I'm asking because I want to know all of the problems I could run into making this type of game with this program. The question is basically, what the best coding format I could use to make this type of game or what is the code for music games where the user uses the keyboard like a guitar, but in my version the keyboard would be used as a piano to play songs because I want to do something like Rock Band 3 on PC.

The Game itself will be a right to left side scrolling game because I'm only putting songs that are played on piano in the game, because I think song on piano are getting little respect in the gaming would.

The songs I plan on putting in the game are as follows (list by artist)

[list]
[1]Galt Aureus- band on YouTube as "Sbgalt"

[2]Elton John

[3]Michelle Branch

[4]Liberace

[5]Staindhttp://www.staind.com/
- only songs with piano

[6]Ludwig van Beethoven

[7]Mozart

[8]Maroon 5

[*Extras*]And more as DLCs

Not to discourage you but if you don't plan on getting permission and/or buying the rights to use all that music you might as well stop now and make something that won't cause you legal problems from copyright violations.

Focus on making a unique-never-been-done-before-game rather than copying a game that's popular.

This video will help you if you still want to make a game like Rock Band 3. This video talks about music in YouTube videos but it's the same as putting music in games we make.

[1]Galt Aureus- band on YouTube as "Sbgalt"
The first band would be the easiest to use because they are an independent band and make all their music themselves.

[2]Elton John
[3]Michelle Branch
[4]Liberace
[5]Staind
[8]Maroon 5
The artists above would be a little bit of a hassel, but I could pull it off with a little letter and some talking to the compyright holders, but I do plan on making this a free game to download when it's complete. So I'll just have "fare-use" involved.

[6]Ludwig van Beethoven
[7]Mozart
As for classical music it's all fare game no copyright, I don't think classical music has a copyright.

This no copyright on Classical music dating from 18th Century
Copyright Law title17

The game is in the planning stage I getting all information on the game first and then I'm going to focus fully on making the game fun time and not part time as I am now. And how do you make a main menu for games so I can get that out of the way and over and done with.

I take all comments and criticism kindly.

The original music of Beethoven and Mozart is not copyrighted but the recordings (CD's) are.

I might just have to use classical music until I can get the rights to use the copyrighted music, because those will take some time to get.

You would also need to get hold of the individual instrument tracks/channels for each tune so that they could be manipulated.

If you wan't to use the music in your game, the game MUST be FREE,otherwise you will get copyright problems

No, using copyrighted material in any form is copyright infringement, unless it's fair use (in the US) or fair dealing (in the UK) or equivalent in whatever country you are in.

It makes no difference whether you are getting paid for your product or not.

In the US Classical music is coincided Fair use if it's 70 or more years old see US Copyright Title 17 should explain it all for the US, website for the UK copyright laws.

Copyright Myths and Facts

More UK Copyright Law Info

Classical music seem like the safest bet for now until I can get the rights to use other music, but the above links should help anyone willing to know about copyright laws.

Within the laws of both the US and the UK I'm allowed to use classical music as long as I site the original creator with the composition himself, but fair use on classical music in the USA only applies to music 70 or more years old.

The first artist produces all his own music with the help of a big record label, so I might even be able to do a whole game around his music after I email him for permission to use his music.

Before you try and get into a debate about this, the last person to claim that copyright didn't matter because his game was free ended up leaving the forums because of the abuse he got.

If you want to build such a game, work on the theory you're going to use free music tracks from the Game Creator store, and leave the big dream of huge bands saying "sure, have our music to distribute for free".

Working on the theory you're going to use Royalty-free music, this thread can focus on your question about game design. If the copyright conversation continues, I will lock the thread based on previous experience on the forums.

Good luck

The mod is right I will deal with the copyright things when it come down to it, plus I will be playing most of the the songs myself.

The main point of this post is game design lets focus on that for the remainder of the this post.

Here are some the main things I want in the game itself:

1. Standard free play mode- called "Free Gig"
2. A Career Mode
3. 3D Character Creation
4. And because I'm doing mainly piano songs I want a side scrolling track that shows a players what buttons to push
5. High Score exporter for forum posting which I will create for players to post exported high scores

I listed the main things I want in the game, but I will take suggestions on adding things to the game and when I get screenshots of the game menu I will be posting this idea in the W.I.P section of the forum for team requests.

Any members who request to be on the "Piano Hero" Team, the Mods of the Forum will remove your post from this thread.

Why not use MIDI format for the musics?
It's more or less recognizable when playing the music, but it can get you out of the copyright stuff...

There are ways in which to configure a RockBand guitar for DBPro, but you're going to have to test and query and test and query the buttons to see which ones are working on the neck of the guitar controller; the start and back buttons, and the button pairs and triplets (i.e. green+red, green+blue, green+yellow, green+orange, green+yellow+orange, etc.), the strum bar, and so on.

There was a program out there that you could tweak, using a Guitar Hero controller, that you could actually play music with... I had it set up almost like guitar-bells and nearly had the baseline to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" down!

Also, there's a set of tools that you can use to create your own songs for RockBand, as part of the RockBand Network member... It's free and its available for download, as RBN is still looking for new songs and bands. (The name is escaping me... #>_<

There are programs that can actually convert what you sing into MIDI. (Music Masterworks is one such program.) This way you can record into a good USB microphone (Logitech), and sing the parts of the song that you need: percussion, lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, voice harmonies...

These are just some of the things I have used for various odd projects. I hope this helps.
