I've read rave reviews about this language and have used it a bit myself, on and off. The "on" comes when I want to create a game, as should be obvious. The "off" soon follows, however, when I'm reminded of the stunning lack of helpful beginner documentation. People will refer me to the forums or a swath of fan-made tutorials. My only problem with these is that they're all completely disconnected and random. They're fun and/or helpful things to try out in the language, yet there seems to be surprisingly few tutorials to help you start off and get a grip on the language in the first place. There are a set of nice beginner tutorials for the regular DB, so why not for DBPro? Anyway, is there any complete tutorial out there that will get me going? And I don't really feel like spending money on the books.

Huh? I'm guessing you've already gone through the "Principles" section in the DBPro help docs?

I have to agree with Phantom887 on this one. There should at least be a Wiki with different ways of doing things. The forum is nice, but the forum search doesn't exactly make it easy to find things sometimes because there is too many different ways to do something on multiple programs. For instance, DarGDK and DarkBasic Pro have same search and I look up ICON. Well one says how do to it in DarkGDK and the other one for DarkBasic Pro takes you to a link where some one says .. "Goto the DarkGDK link here, and they answer your question you noob. Do a search next time." that type of response I see all over.

The problem, besides the rudeness, is that we DO look on search, but not all commands are the same on all software. I found that what works on DarkGDK does NOT work on DarkBasic Pro for a couple things.

Example.. in DarkGDK one guy gives some source code that he says it works using a | .. but when you try that in DarkBasic Pro it gives an error. So you have to replace it with OR. Although it will work with || as well. Now to a noob who has no clue, they would not have figured that out, I did because I been through this before.

My point is, I'm not trying to bash this forum by any means, although it may come across that way.. what I'm trying to say is we need a Wiki that can be updated and make it easier for all those who are not getting that there is more then one program here on this website. I mean now there is AGK. That just throws another set of questions who don't know any better.

Again, please understand, I have a lot of respect for this website and its creators and admins.. but my humble suggestion is to make a Wiki section to cut down on a lot of clatter on the forums.

Its what Code::Blocks finally did and now their noobish questioners have gone down a lot. Wiki Rules..

DarkGDK and Darkbasic Pro are two different things so of course they usually aren't interchangeable. We usually send newbies to TDKs Tutorials because the basics of Darkbasic Pro are the same for both Classic and Pro. Why should we reinvent the wheel?

The instructions included with DB Pro seem quite good to me, but I had a decent knowledge of basic before using it. Tutorials for Dark Basic should be fine for DB Pro as the basics are the same. The only differences are in some of the more specific commands.

I used a .pdf of the TDK tutorials which I really enjoyed working through (and preferred to using the html versions):

I agree with DVader, I found the help system in dark basic pro to be an excellent source of information. all of the example programs in there do an excellent job of showing you how you can do things and the documentation of the commands is clear and easy to grasp.

when I started out with dark basic I used the help files, tdk's tuts and just threw myself into trying things, when i hit a brick wall i asked for help in the forum.

help files, online tuts and forum dwellers helping are all the help you can really dream of.

In the help file did you read...
getting started
&
principals

and for ongoing reference
commands
examples

that pretty much is a complete tutorial to get you going.
