Been playing with terragen and made some pretty good skyboxes. Made my own skybox with milkshape but get ugly lines between faces. Found a modified one by vanb, pretty good but plumped for 5 plains textured with 5 sky views as I feel I have more control. Made 'em overlap by a couple of pixels and hay presto, no lines.

The question I am asking is what is max texture size that most pc's will handle as I understand some old graphics cards can't handle big textures. 512 * 512 is pretty good but is it safe to go higher?

well mine can handle 2048x2048 textures. GeForce 3. If someone is using a card to old to handle 512x512, they probably couldn't run your game smoothly anyway.

You could provide several texture sizes and use the GET MAXIMUM TEXTURE WIDTH/GET MAXIMUM TEXTURE HEIGHT to decide which to load

Doing it your way means you have the textures in memory - so why not make a little memblock function to reduce the image size to 256x256. You could have Low or High res textures as an option - and you'd only need 1 bitmap file.

I have not dabbled with memblocks yet - looks too difficult (but is probably quite easy). I already have option for screen-res but didn't even think about texture-res. A good idea I think.

Thanks IanM, I did not know about that command - that's just what I was looking for!

Please do allow it to go up to 1024x1024; 512x512 works for walls and floors, but really stutters as a skybox .

A very nice %it, indeed.

I'm using the command that IanM suggested to get maximum texture size for users graphics card and loading appropriate sized images up to 1024 X 1024. I think 2048 is a bit too big! It's for the alien compo and so it all depends how much free space is left to play with.

Sky is not that important in my game as a fair amount of the game is indoors but a naff looking sky would let the game down immensly for the sections that are outdoors.
