Do you think there room for another game launcher ?

I'm think an easy custom launcher where you can just drag and drop, what your ideas on this.

What would you like to see in an launcher ?

I think a drag and drop launcher would be great! Does anyone know of a launcher with options and all of that already made? And that you can just change the background and the texts/buttons etc..

Also the option to add background music to the launcher and sounds when you click buttons would be cool.

I would love to see something like this sure. I would also like to see maybe an auto patcher built in? so a developer can put a patch on his network and when your launcher detects it, it patches. I would also like to see a built in setting changer. Shaders on and off and so forth. Something that looks snazy and has some customization.

To add to the suggestion by Fuzz and expand on his suggestion...

Perhaps you could also add a "Manual" or "Documentation" button that either points to a document file that is with the launcher (ex: PDF, text file, etc), or allow a web address to be used. This way I can create a manual in one place (on a web page), update just the one source and whenever someone clicks the "Manual" button, it takes them to that page. Beats having to recreate the manual if an update occurs.

I like all the suggestions so far. I would like a launcher to be as generic, clean and simple as possible, so in addition to the above I would like to see all these buttons as options. Basically I want a launcher that works well and doesn't try to do everything possible.

if its true that fpsc cannot run the 50 levels (heard something like "only 5-6 levels with 1600mb+") it would be great if there is a way to combine different game.exe into 1 launcher so you got "chapters" for the game.

is there something out there wich can do that, or better, is it true that fpsc has limits here?

Seem there a few people think its worth doing a new launcher and there some nice ideas what should be in it.

I'm looking at some design's at the moment to see the best way to do this.

Keep the ideas coming.

Doing a bit of market research and would want to know why you think other launchers in the past have not been used that much in games ?

Is it they dont have what you need ?

To hard to use ?

Or something else ?

I think the biggest thing for me is that launchers in the past try to support FPSC as well as other games. For instance, I use SGlauncher. SGLauncher is probably one of the coolest and most user friendly/feature packed launcher I know of to date. The problem with his is, it's geared for every and all games. I would like to see a FPSC dedicated launching system. With built in webbrowser support, game patch support, setting changing support. Only geared for FPSC. Plus, it's nice to see what other developers make. There is never enough launchers. It gives developers something to think about when they launch there game. It makes everything unique.

I would agree with what Soviet176 says about there being a Launcher designed for FPSC and not one that is designed for everything.

I use Neobook for my games and something along the lines of it, would be great.

Definitely the ability to launch multiple games from one main launch screen. They could be chapters like the above mentioned or a single player button that launches the single player game and a multiplayer button that launches one or more multiplayer maps.

I made one a while back but it just had a config.ini file where you script your settings, but I like your Idea and I myself would definately make use of drag n drop, saves time, dont have to think "what was that darn script again?"
definately needs video and image splash screen
mabe a screenshot box when you select a level
settings button would be nice.
I'd like a launcher that would allow for select of single or multiplayer and multiplayer button would bring you to another menu to choose a map.

that is mainly a question of design, dont use only text please. its a trend at the moment to get simplified surfaces (thanks @apple^^), but this trend could skip within a month. what when you want to frame your text or set it up as a smartphone-apps-surface?

easy to make pure text with button, but impossible to make buttons out of pure-text.

Just to point out. I also use Unreal and they have switched to Scaleform which is a plugin for Adobe Flash. I don't recommend that because it is so expensive, but something similar with the GUix9 would be sweet.

im thinking a settings feature for compatibility options,
for low end computers or high end computers

low graphics-static lighting only- no shader effects
medium graphics-dynamic lighting
high detail graphics-dynamic lighting and shader effects.

something like that.

Your signature has been erased by a mod please resize it to no more that 600 x 120.

well looking at this game launcher ideas and come up with the idea to not have it fully custom to a degree.

This is so the launcher is very easy to use.

The only things I'm thinking of is that options and key binder will be set to a certain format where you can change the background image for options and keybinder, to keep with your style of of text you would put your text into the background image.

The launcher im think of making is not going to be as advanced as sg launcher due to not using a scripting method to keep it as simple as possible.

It be a case of pick an background image load in ya button images , drag and drop the buttons where u need them.

Pick background image options, pick keybinder background image click build and u have a game ready to go.

Simple as one two three.

Also have the options to sae themes so people can make themes for the launcher.

I feel there no point in going down the sg launcher root as thats already been done, so if you want the launcher to have more options then I would say use sg launcher this launcher im thinking of making is to make it as simple as possible.

whats ya ideas on this.

One very nasty issue we have with X9 is the DirectX9 requirement. As you know, there is no version checking built into an FPSC game and anyone who has a recent OS (Vista or 7) does not get DirectX9 by default.

Can you include DirectX version checking and possibly other minimum system requirement checking too? The best thing to have would be a launcher that includes the latest DirectX9 distribution and can install it if necessary. A lesser option would be to point the user to the download and offer instructions.

Just a thought.

This is looking excellent s4 did you decide to do an autopatcher system?

on another note when you release this and have nothing else to do, i thought of a cool update for your packing system the one that uses keys to unpack. How about a option for devs to either use an embedded key system or a file server system to check keys online to see if they have already been used. As always good work!

The problem with an autopatcher is fpsc has no system to update the game, so I,m thinking maybe a button where it sends you to your website to get the latest update but no system has be added at the moment.

As for vishnu lock I did think about adding online support but because the app is free I didn't add the feature, maybe in the future.

I'm looking for some people to make some themes for the launcher if you want to make a theme and mess with an alpha version then email me.

There are a few videos onine how to patch a fpsc if thats what you mean. Really it just replaces the .exe and light maps ect the way it would work is check a txt file on a users web server for the version number then if a new version is found, download the .zip which the user would have to make follow the fpsc organization. Files/gamecore ect with the updated files. The patcher would then extract and overwrite old files.


As for vishnu lock it would be the similar as the above. The program would read /write to an file on the users web server that would add a 1 for a not used key. If someone uses the key then it would add a 2 so no one else can use that key.

Update :-

Well I wanted it to be easy for people to update there game with launcher with out having to do a lot of setup so I've gone with an web link option.

The weblink can be used for all sorts of thing's like update your game or go to your homepage.

All you have to do is type in the web url you want it to go to and it will open your default browser to the site.

You change the image and size of the weblink the same as the other buttons.

Also you have the option to turn it on or off.

Excellent. Now how will the user know if there is and update? I speak from experiance when I say most average users would ignore the update button and just play the game. Also, how will the update install? Most people would expext it to auto install. Will we have to make an exe or will we make a zip and someone has to extract?

As it stands at the moment you can add a weblink to direct you to a webpage, you can use that as an update page where people would download your patch and its upto you to make it an installer.

Autopatching would be something for the future to think about.
