Having seen a lot of threads saying its not possible to have a select area for water in FPSC x9, that you can only cover the entire grid area, I decided to take a quick look at it.
I know that lowering the water level below the floor can give the appearance of water being only in a pool or whatever and trigger zones can be used to turn water on/off when not in the area.
But what if your water is contained in a 'tank' where you want to have walls or whatever without water outside this.
After messing with the WaterMask.bmp image file found in effectbank/common you can indeed limit where water appears, though I have to admit it caused me real headaches working out where this water would appear, it seems that is has no real relation to the grid size or position and is strangely mirrored, but I got it working just the same.
Before anyone thinks this solves all, it doesn't, if you fall into the corridor trench area you will find yourself under water, so you would still have to use trigger zones to turn it off should you enter areas below the water line. But for appearance sake it looks pretty good.

It's always great to see the more experienced forumites at work, it really is inspiring for those of us that are just starting out with custom media creation.

I agree. Usually when these type of things come up, we wait for Rolfy to share his knowledge so we can glean valuable insight to add to our collective.

Heres the map file attached (its all stock media) and the WaterMask, put it in your effectbank/common folder (remember to back up the original).
I would be interested to see how it works for others.

Make sure you use the default shader and scripts from the V1.18 download, if you downloaded any scripts/shaders from the forums they dont have the shader code required to use WaterMask.
Even so it might still be funky which is why I want others to try it out.

Hey rolfy, this is exactly what I was looking for! But.. One problem. When I downloaded your script, this is just a sample of what I downloaded..

For some reason, I don't think that's right. So.. What am I doing wrong?

@IntRepid Bullet You need to unpack it with winrar or any other program that supports rar files.

That is very interesting indeed. What a nightmare to place that in an existing level.

But if you made your water mask first then built your level around it it would be very interesting.

A little note. I was using Dark Goblins new water shader and your mask made no difference, still full level water on the top side.

Changed back to Vanilla and worked as advertised. Great find.

I have been mapping the wasser one to entities and making holes in segments to give me puddles and stuff.

S4real. Shouldn't notepad support rar. files? Because that's what I'm opening it with.. If it doesn't, can you suggest a programme that I could download that WILL support it?

Thankyou.

No, notepad is really only for text (.txt) files, what you need is WinRar.

I reject your reality and substitute my own...

Er, I'm not quite familiar how to use WinRar... How am I supposed to read the file? And then save it into the scriptbank?... Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob.

winrar is just the packer. download winrar, install, then open the rolfy-load and follow the instructions in his post where the download is available.

the fpm is a mapfile, so put it into your mapbank-folder

After installing Winrar simply double click the file waterzone.rar.You can drag the files straight from winrar to the folders.

The watermask.bmp goes your effectbank/common folder.
The waterzone.fpm goes in your mapbank folder.

You can then open the level in FPSC, the download contains no scripts or shaders as it uses the stock ones that come with FPSC.

You MUST use the default Evolved shader from FPSC, if you downloaded ANY of the shaders or sripts from elesewhere on the forums they are missing the needed code required to use this.
I have attached the shader it needs, use the map I provided. Put it in effectbank/common.

Hey Rolfy.
Nice idea but I also knew about that one and that you would still have the plane on the whole layer even if you are able to assign the water mask (which is not that easy!).

But still nice that someone else found that out ;D (maybe some should start checking Evolveds page, there you can clearly see the use of a water mask).

You need to use the stock shader which came with any of the official updtates.
