I am with Virgin Media for my broadband (50Mbits) and for the past half a year or more I have been getting weird high connection spikes, starting out from 30-40Mbits and then spiking up to 180-250Mbits.

This is causing weird ping's in game. I normally get around 35-50 ping on European servers. Just now I was getting 7-9 ping and I was lagging out.. I would understand 999 ping causing severe lag and being disconnected, but 7-9 ping? That's just odd.



Spiked around 125Mbits when I did the test.

Did you try pingtest.net to test the quality of your connection?

Bizarre... either way, a low ping in a game doesn't necessarily mean that the connection quality will be good at that moment; I spoke to someone just recently from Argentina that had a 100mb connection with generally a really low ping to all nearby servers he connected to, but permanently lagged because the connection quality was poor. In your case it sounds like it might be just happening at certain times instead of continuously.

You're not using wireless, are you?

I am, it's the only option I have as the router is downstairs in the front room while I have my computer upstairs in my bedroom. I've never really had problems with wireless, but if I could, I would use wire.

Woah, nice connection speed!


Uhh, my laptop has trouble connecting to the (wifi) internet while the microwave is running, and there could be all sorts of other interferences. Try keeping an eye out for them when you get lag issues?

Generally if you play games online you should try to avoid wireless where possible since it's not very reliable (being prone to interference from other electrical devices). I'd strongly recommend using a cable.

I've been using wireless for years (no cable connection), never had a significant problem except for the occasional signal drop, even to which it fixes itself nearly instantly. I understand if you're in a crowded or public area.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.
