Hi there.
I started to add fog to my world so that buildings would disappear into the distance. The problem is that (Probably quite obvious to most of you) I can’t see my sky dome anymore. I tried turning the fog off for the sky dome object but then the buildings just get fog coloured before being eaten by the edge of the sky dome. I'm not sure how to deal with this now. I need to get my objects to disappear once they are a certain distance away and I would like to be able to see my sky dome.
Any comments would be much appreciated.

well you could experiment with the clipping range of the camera.
but, otherwise, your SOL unless you just use code to hide objects that are beyond a certain range.

Well.
I tried messing with the camera range but you can see the objects breaking down in a rather rough fashion. I like the fog because the objects gradually fade into the background before they hit the outer camera range. I could increase the camera range to the point that the objects are very far away when they are clipped but then the load on the computer might be a bit much.
Hmmmm....

Squeeze your sky dome (if it is a sphere)..that way you'll be able to see it above you, even if not straight ahead..
like: scale object skysphere 100,50,100
you may need to properly model the texture to it tho, since it will be stretched..
keep camera range bigger than your original unsqueezed sky sphere radius
hope it helps
cheers

This bugged me for a while.

The thing is to make a sky dome that fades near the bottom to the same color as your fog. This is what Morrowind does with its fantastic skies. Also squashing the sky sphere to about 5-1-5 scale works well with visual effects for me.

A very nice %it, indeed.

actually, morrowind didn't use anything but a simple, yet great looking seamless texture that was textured over and over again. I know, I spent a lot of time watching those skies. Of course, there were few layers, with the stars and all that... but I don't think the cloud layers ever "touched the ground", so to speak.

there is a command like "set object fog" for this...
Using it, the sphere won't fade away.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the suggestions about fogging and skyboxes and spheres and fading sky to fog colour. Really helped me out!

Used Terragen to generate my 5 views, stuck 'em on plains, made some fog, a matrix and loads of cubes and get something like this:

Hi there.

I now have something similar to spooky, not looking quite as nice but i'm on the right path.

Many thanks for all your input chaps. I must say this site has been an invaluable source of information to me as someone who is fairly new to game development.

Cheers.
