I was thinking of starting an online academy for teaching video game and web game development, as well as web development and programming in general.

I was wondering if this great community would think including DarkBasic would attract interest or if the community has enough training material available to make it unnecessary.

Thanks,

I doubt it would attract a lot of interest. There is a lot of freely available material but I guess it depends on the quality.

I wouldn't bother if you are charging for the service. There is far more material available on the forums than you could ever provide. In My Honest Opinion.

My post sounds very negative on reflection and I hope you don't think I was being rude. I just meant that there are a lot of other available resources and it is unlikely people will pay for something that is freely available, although it might be nice to have a recognised qualification for DBP.

If you are providing a free resource or some kind of recognised qualification then I would say go ahead, you might help a lot of people.

I hope I didn't put you off this community as we are generally more positive and helpful. Sorry!

I think maybe the OP took your post a little more personally that s/he should have, to be honest. It's a nice idea in principle but I can't help but feel it would be very hard to make work.

But if the OP believes in it, do it anyway without asking for advice on the forums as to whether they should!

Perhaps, but I was just letting FlyingWild know that I meant it as solid honest advice not as a 'put-down'...

Sometimes we don't see that what we are writing is not having the desired result. 99% of programming is like that in my experience

Though in my opinion, rich but still random material provided is totally not the same as teaching following a well constructed path...

There is everything online for everything today basically, but you need to know what is where, and precisely know what is called what to be able to look after it.

So what i mean is that it can be tricky to think about for someone who codes well, to estimate how is the situation going for someone just wanting to start. And this is highly true for everything, for example i can't really get into todays web design, i have never had teachers who showed more than basic html stuff, and the whole subject is just way ahead for me to learn on my own. I kinda feel old for it now with only 23 years, though on the other hand i have never had a teacher for programming but i'm fine with that because i started, on my own, but started it way back at around when i was 10.

-In.Dev.X: A unique heavy story based shoot'em ~35%
-CoreFleet: An underground commander unit based RTS ~15%
-TailsVSEggman: An Sonic themed RTS under development for idea presentation to Sega ~15%

True, and there are many well constructed tutorials which are relatively easy to find and follow. I found DBP very easy to learn from the tutorials I found on the forums.

It was pretty simple, I looked at the forums, saw "Newcomers DBPro Corner" and easily found some great tutorials which got me started. I hadn't done much programming in around 15-20 years at that point having been a blacksmith for about 13 years...

These days there are many more tutorials and just as many people willing to answer what I used to think were "stupid" questions on the forums when newcomers start trying to do their own thing.

I teach programming to complete novices (around the world) on a fairly regular basis as part of my job so I think I'm in a pretty good position to know what it's like for people to start programming from scratch.

Most of the people I teach do best after 3-4 days of training by just having a go themselves. The ones who do this always end up doing some really good stuff. That 3-4 days training is pretty much structured like a tutorial, if it wasn't I would probably miss some important things out!

Anyway I think the main point I was making was that it was not currently necessary with the wealth of good material readily available here on the forums, and therefore might not do very well.

FW, you might do better providing training for AppGameKit when it comes out as the material available there is... zilch, at the moment. If you're looking for some constructive criticism then that would be my suggestion for the way forward.

Good luck anyway FW, I hope some of these comments (from everyone here) are helping you!
