I started playing around with directx9 SDK, and I'm getting all confused with the .fx creater, (is it c/c++ coding or just a made up one...hey, I don't know...),

can anyone give me more info on the .fx proggy...(or DX9 SDK)?

It uses HLSL for the shaders. The effect edit program is for editing HLSL shaders that are in the .fx file format. If you open the directx c++ help file(C:\DXSDK\Doc\DirectX9\DirectX9_c with the default installation)the documentation for the effect edit program should be under introduction to directx graphics->programming guide->tutorials, samples, tools, and tips->samples->(underneath but not in bump mapping samples)->effectedit sample.

If you have any further questions just post'em.

Do you have any more info on those?
How hard it is to modify & create those .fx files?

quite hard, it is more or less assembler because you work straight on the graphics card registers ...

Might want to try RenderMonkey from ATI.

http://www.ati.com/developer/sdk/radeonSDK/html/Tools/RenderMonkey.html

It's free from their website. It allows you to manipulate the shaders in real time and then export to a .fx file. Problem for me is I have the trial version of DBPro and it doesn't seem to want to load the fx files after I create them. I'm waiting for the copy I bought to arrive.

Actually, you can use assembler and HLSL in .fx files.

The problem isn't DBPro its RenderMonkey. There are issues right now with their .fx exporter. Open up the .fx file in Notepad and read the part at the top. I've found a few problems in it so far beyond the simple name resolution problem it talks about so if you need help just post and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks, Neophyte. I'll take a look at it next time I'm working in DBPro. Is there somewhere to get examples of usable .fx files so as to compare them to Rendermonkey's? Maybe they can be edited to make them work. Don't know I'm just guessing.

There are a few examples in the DX9 SDK. You can find it here at:

Hope this helps.

I just installed DX 9.0 SDK last night (along with Visual Studio .net), So any ideas on how should I get started on the shaders? Basically I'd like to have some example shaders that I could modify and compile. (to test out stuff)

btw, DBpro comes with few .fx files too... I'm guessing these are from the SDK, right?

Well, there is this link from issue 9:

That should get you started.

Yeah, is there at least one shader example. Just a quick one to show us how to get started in DBPro.

G'day
