I haven't taken a game theory course... And I'm wondering how one goes about ensuring that a game is balanced. Especially in matters where players have similar but different strenths and weaknesses. Anyone have material on the topic that is reasonably digestible.

I imagine that some of this is common sense and a bit of trial and error. I have seen mathematical solutions via matrixes and set theory,, but much of it seems to go over my head, fast; even on what one would think of as a quite simple game.

I've wondered how games like StarCraft seem to get things right, offering similar but different enough races, tech-trees, etc... yet still keep a sense of balance across the board.

More specific to my situation. I am looking at making a video card game, say similar to Magic The Gathering. Before I begin designing cards... is there a way that I can organize and keep track of the game balance as I add cards. How do I limit making mistakes of creating "game ending" cards?

Lots and lots of play-testing with experienced game testers.

... Oh, and welcome back
