I've just recently shared my CD drive from my desktop and mapped it on to my netbook (which doesn't have a CD drive). After that I started installing Age of Empires 2 and am immediately having issues around 40% into the install... It says that the file it wants to install is in use, and I've attempted the install multiple times with the same results. I've tried this on both of my optical drives, and I even gave username/password credentials when mapping to the netbook, yet the problem still persists (always around 40%, the same spot).

Has anyone else had this issue? Maybe my desktop's using the shared files and halting the install for some reason, in that case I'm not sure why it's doing that. Either that or it's just a result of the game being a bit old, although it's worked fine on a normal CD drive install before.

Are you using windows 7? My fix/workaround for this was copy entire disk to hdd {in my computer right click cd drive>copy>paste somewhere and access those files for install, should also route out whether your disk is faulty or not...}

If need any further guidance just ask.

I had same install issues on Win7 might be because of files or something... perhaps try disable FireWall? and Security Scanner during install if not try my above mentioned idea.

Yeah, copy the files directly to a pc folder and then install.

I'm trying that, now a bit into the copy I'm getting a "You require permission from Everyone to make changes to this file" error... Hmmm, I wonder if there's a way to reach Everyone via telephone and get their permission...

In all seriousness though I probably need to turn off my firewall/antivirus temporarily to get this to work... That's probably whats causing the issue. I'll post back with results. (and yes, I do have Windows 7 Home Premium on both desktop and netbook.)

Sigh... I tried turning off the firewall on the desktop, still failed, turned firewall back on, turned off CA Internet Security Suite on the desktop, still failed. I even got a BSOD by ejecting my BD drive after another failed attempt. Here's the information Windows gave me:

WhoCrashed tells me that the problem was probably caused by cdfs.sys, which means that this is related to the other problems I've been having.

I wish this would just work. I'll probably have to resort to transferring the files via a flash drive or something...

EDIT: I tried just copying the disk contents to my desktop (no network involved) and have the same problem, so that isolates it to the CD. They either have copyright protection on it, or the CD's just broken. I'm not sure. I'll probably either try another disk, clean it, or create and mount an ISO image of it. At least I know now that this probably isn't a network issue.

EDIT: EDIT: Yep, I tried another copy of the disk I had and it turns out that the old one had corrupt sector(s). It did have a few marks on it anyway. The new disk works though, so problem solved.

Yeah, the new CD installed, but now the copyright protection's getting in the way and refusing to run the game over the network. What I'd really like is something like Virtual CloneDrive that'd be able to mount shared folders, instead of just disc images...

But at least some of my other games install AND run.

AoE 2 had copy protection? I never had any issues with it, but sadly I can't play it anymore cause I can't find my CD

My friend's laptop's CD drive was broken and we were trying to upgrade to win7. So we shared the drive from my laptop over the network and upgraded windows with that. I was a little surprised it actually worked.

wasnt copy protection was cd verification

EDIT

@Phaelax

I thought you meant over network on boot so I didnt have much to say apart from... ooooooo I havent done that before or have I? cant remember if I did but you said upgrade so im guessing you meant inside WINDOWS thats same as installing a program over network... it copies data onto local hdd to minimise disk access as there is a lot of compressed data on the disk forexample if you tried copying an original windows 7 x64 disk to hdd....... huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge!!! last I remember over 14GB off a 4.7 disk... before someone asks why I was doing so... needed some files from the disk and they were not accessible in compressed state... anyway its interesting just how much data can be beld in under 1MB dont want to take ths thread off topic but think it would be an interesting debate over how well people on these forums know of data compression... for example I had a 1.7KB zip file a while back talking 7+ years ago exxpanded it was 3.7GB I believe either that or 6.4GB >.< anyone want to figure out what was going on there?

@MrValentine Thanks for the email, sounds like a good thing to try if I can't get this game to run normally via network CD drive.

This is a good KB article explaining the trouble I'm having running the game (first error, "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application.", upon execution). The thing is that AoE 2 Conquerors has always run well directly from my desktop when using this disc, and I can even access setup via the netbook, so I think this is some kind of disc verification getting in the way.

It'd be nice to have something like Virtual CloneDrive that'd be able to dynamically mount my shared CD drive folders, instead of just images which I'd have to rip for each game I play. Perhaps if I had no CD in the drive, or if my network were out of range, the virtual drive would simply pretend to have "no disk" instead of giving me an annoying "some drives could not be found" error upon startup.

Your welcome... daemon tools which is a nifty bit of kit might help but as far as I know even AOE2 will out smart you... use my suggestion from the email

Get an external HDD / SHDC 32GB+ stick hehe works wonders for large storage of non-essential files.

I hope an admin doesnt smite me, please just edit my message out if I overstepped the AUP please!

Finally ended up using DT and it actually works great now (it has a specific feature for circumventing Safedisc, which is what AoE2 and other Microsoft games use for copy protection/CD verification). So problem solved for the most part.
