Say I have a box, which I do not want to be visible, but I want its shadow to be visible (set shadow shading on). How would I do this?

Instead of hiding it, have you tried set object alpha so it's completely transparent.

Instead of hiding the object, you have to hide its limb 0.

Cheers.
