Aight so I tried to start this up a little while ago and it didn't work, but since I do not see an official comp thread at the moment, so I figured it'd be a cool idea to start again.

This competition is all about hand painting. Specifically, hand painted wood.

The competitors (should there be any) will have 4 hours to create a hand painted wood texture consisting of two planks. Trust me four hours is PLENTY of time.

The Image size must be 512 by 1024 pixels. And no filters or images are allowed. This is 100 percent HAND PAINTED.

And just to prove you've taken only 4 hours, or less, you must record the entire process, with some sort of time counter (camtasia studio has this built in) to show how much time its been. Just be sure to timelapse the video before you upload it to vimeo or youtube or whatever.

So yeah the other judge will be mike5424 (he doesnt know yet lol) but I'm sure he'll agree. You are obviously allowed to use reference but dont think we're judging based on how close you hit the ref. We're judging based on how much style on style and the execution of the texture.

You are allowed to use any resource you can possibly find, be it tutorials, reference, what have you.

And if know one joins, or if not enough people join, me and mike will just have our own personal competition lol.

Oh, and do a single post showing that you're in and then just edit it with the final and the video Happy painting!!

edit: you no longer need to record you process

Hehehe, I'm in!

I'll have to find some software to take a video and I'll have to remember my password for youtube, but I'm game.

When's the deadline?

Tutorials: For anyone who's interested, polycount has a nice section on handpainted textures. Very helpful.

Please note that Camo is talking about using a tablet
Not actual handpainting

Coming in at 2 hours and a half D:

Will have to use the rest of my time wisely, if i want to make it look decent. As mike pointer out, the right plank looks like **** but that's what i am working on now.

I know i have deviated like 3 rules here, so feel free to leave me out of the competition if it causes too much of an issue, but i will make an entry none-the-less.

Alright so I guess I'll just have this post as some resources to aid people.

http://wiki.polycount.com/TexturingTutorials - polycount wiki, tons of tutorials and helpful pages.

http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68601&highlight=hand+painted+wood&page=2

http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68416&highlight=hand+painted+wood

keep in mind not all of these are tutorials persay, but you'll always learn something just by observing.

GameBuilder - There you go now get painting!

PB - woo glad to have you in! And I'll let this go on for a week or two. And yeah a mouse is difficult but think about it jfletcher did the majority of his texturing up until dominance war 4 with a mouse...just shows you what can be done with it

Asteric - lol dw i trust you jake , and nice texture, but it just doesnt feel hard enough youknow. feels too soft all around and there are no real cracks defined. And you need some imperfections on the plannk itself. other than that. That is, unless you're not through with your four hours yet lol.keep it up

Wolf - yes I think thats kind of obvious I mean hand painting in photoshop/gimp/whatever, which is the term for this kind of texturing and you're not limited to a tablet you can use a mouse. Hope you decide to join in

Alright everyone get to it!!

So you can give me another lecture about texturing?

I'm just kidding I'm afraid I don't have the time just right now as I agreed to help on 2 other projects in my computer time.

But I'll join in the next monthly 3D Master contest again. Hope to see you there too

Ironically, if we were talking about actual hand painting (as in, with paint and a brush) I'd have no problem. I whip up wood textures on Warhammer miniatures in about twenty minutes and people have to check to make sure it's plastic.

piratejohn - lol well then you'd have to transfer that skill into photoshop to participate!!

pbcrazy - yeah its pretty cool to have him judge

And I'm taking away the rule on recording. just to make it easier for participants. This will be all based on trust

That's nice of ya.

I think I'll still record mine, if any one here is anything like me, they'll want to see each others methods. Plus, it'll be a new experience, me recording my work process.

It might be this weekend though till I get enough time to sit down and do this thing though, homework and all that from school... >.>

hehe you don't need to record, you can if you want, but keep in mind, you only have a total of 4 hours to paint your texture. I'm deciding to just trust the entrants in stead of making them record themselves. So yeah just a final pic would be alright. And yeah that would be pretty interesting to see

decided to be uncreative and make a texture: originally intended it to be a texture for a model.. but i gave up on that lol: first try at a fully handpainted wooden texture coming up:

not too shabby imo :3

edit: realized i should have looked at the size limits...

quik - good start, but why is it so curved? and overall the big shapes on the plank don't really read well as cracks, you might want to sharpen those up a little.

Thanks for the critisism, i will get to it... maybe try and straighten it up a bit too

Any chance I can enter a piece I created a few days before the start of this comp? I honestly don't have the time right now to work on a new one, not until this weekend at least. But I'd still really like to get some comments from Fletcher even if I'm not eligible to win.

Awesome, thank you! If I manage to find time before you end the competition, I'll be sure to create a new one for this and swap out my entries.

Sorr, but the tutorial was made by Fletcher. I just posted it because I saw someone said there was a virus on the site, but I thought I would save people the trouble.

Ok, I love doing little things like this, so after having some time tonight I thought it was time I did this. I didn't really stick to the 1024x512 texture, but I liked the result I came up with at 512x512. I have the start time and the finished time. It took me alittle over an hour to do this.

Start:

Finished:

Result without sharpen:

looking pretty good starmind, but I think it would look tons better if you didn't use straight black as the outline. Maybe a black-redish color. And those random black lines aren't really doing anything for the texture so I would ditch them or turn them into something solid. keep it up

I thought I would give it a go, but didn't read the rules lol. So this took about half an hour, and uses Photoshop filters. Oh well...

Hello,

I have decided to have a go at this competition too, I hope I'm not too late!

I used ArtRage to paint the image. Original is 512x1024. Created in less than two hours elapsed time.

Feedback is welcome, I've never tried this before.

decided to ive this a go, was looking for that JFletcher tutorial for a while so I was very pleased when Starmind posted it, thanks for that.

it's entirely hand painted, although I did sharpen at some pointso I don't know if that excludes me from the competition

Anyway, nice entries so far

nope mazz sharpen is fine in fact I would recommend it. Good work mazz although on some cracks it seems like you've gone completely black, I would try to avoid that if I were you and maybe slightly tint it
