I'm confused. where do I select the file and path that the executable gets saved to? and how do I compile to an exe file. It keeps creating one when I save my code but in an old file name and I cant see where to change it. seems not very user friendly to me

File->Save As... for source code, File->Save Project As for the project file, and the executable name is held in the Properties tab and will be created in the same directory as the project file.

TBH, I'm with you on this - the fact that the editor gives default names to everything, sometimes saving in a temporary directory, isn't very clever.
