Hello FPSC community,

A little background info:

I have been going back and forth with Technical Support - they're very patient and helpful people, BTW - and I have not been going anywhere very far with their advice before I'm put back at square one and faced with my original problem: when I load any characters, FPSC crashes! NOT COOL!

So, while waiting for one of their responses, I decided to try the "Repair" option the FPSC installer had. It worked the first time I opened FPSC after repairing it. After that, I got the same problems again.

So I go to uninstall it. And, what do ya know? It CRASHES!!!

So, as the title says, what do I do now?

Tech support said I probably have a virus, and to scan my system. I've done that, and I've responded to tech support. I suggested to them that maybe I can delete FPSC and all the other files (thereby bypassing the installer engine) and then reinstall it on the computer (since FPSC doesn't require online activation - right?).

Please help me!

Thank you,
Captain Coder

Okay, Tech Support has gotten back to me and they say I should find an uninstaller program online and use that to FORCE FPSC to uninstall. I found one but it uses the FPSC uninstaller - which crashed. I have an idea on how to make it work, but does the community have any suggestions? I really wanna use FPSC!

Thank you,
Captain Coder

If you're going to manually delete your FPSC folder, you will need to use a registry cleaner as well. I recommend CCleaner from Piriform.

Thanks Bruce3371, I'll look into.

But first, let me clarify: CAN I DELETE THE FPSC APPLICATION AND REINSTALL IT WITH THE SAME SERIAL CODE WITHOUT A PROBLEM?

I do not want to have to get a new serial code, any time that happens your stuck waiting a while.

Thanks again,

Okay, here's an update. Tech Support got back to me quickly, (yea! ) and said I could manually delete all of FPSC. They also said if I did that, I would need to cleanse the registry of ALL references of FPSC.

So, will CCleaner do that? It looks promising, but I want to make sure that I get it right the first time. It's getting a bit annoying how I keep trying stuff and the problem never completely goes away.

Thanks!

EDIT

I just saw that they have a free version and a commercial home version (as I suspected ) Does the FREE version perform registry cleanings?

Yes, the free version does registry cleanings, as wells as temp file cleanings, it even has an uninstaller function.

Basically, it does everything you need it to do on a home pc, it's not a limited trial, it's fully functional; you only need the network/enterprise version if you need to clean several PCs on a business network.

Thanks Bruce3371! I've downloaded it and will install it later.

@TheDesertEagle:

I use Vista. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I, for one, do!

@TheDesertEagle: You and I are, apparently, one of a kind, because virtually everyone I know hates Vista! Anyway, I can't right-click on any of the files and set it's "compatibility," in both Control Panel Uninstaller and on the applications themselves. I've never heard of that being done before. Could you provide some more specific details on this idea?

@Bruce3371: Ok, I've installed it, now how do I clean the registries (I am going to go for a cleaning before I delete anything)? I am able to scan them, so should I select everything and then press "Fix selected issues?"

Thanks guys!

I am still feeling a little bit hesitant about deleting everything and then cleaning the registries. Would an expert at a computer store be able to help me out?

I have also found a program called "Registry Editor" already on my computer, which will allow me to delete things from the registry manually. However, I am terrified that I might screw up my computer if I delete the wrong thing. What should I do now?

@Bruce3371: I have found an option in CCleaner that will allow me to wipe reference from the registries, is this what I'm looking for?

@Mods: Could someone move this to Geek Culture? I might have better luck there.

I am not sure what the 1.18 installer is - unless it is the upgrade installer.

My problem is that after I used the "Repair" option, I later tried the "Uninstall" option. Whenever I use the "Uninstall" option, the installer crashes. Not sure what to do about it. I'll probably take it to a computer store and have them fix it for me, but I would like to do this myself if I can.

Thanks,
Captain Coder

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, my ISP has been playing me up the last few days, sometimes I can get online, sometimes I can't . Anyway. yes, click "Fix Selected Issues".

When running a registry scan, I always tick all the boxes for what needs to be scanned, then I always fix all the detected issues.

The other thing I've found that helps, is to use the Custom Files and Folders option, when running the Cleaner itself (The top function in the UI). This way, you can tell it to delete a specific folder (In this case the FPSC folder).

I've found that CCleaner is perfectly safe, it has never done any harm to my PC, so I wouldnt worry about the registry scanner doping any harm, just select all the issues, and let it do its thing.

Again, sorry I didn't back to you sooner, hope you get it sorted (if you haven't already!)

@TheDesertEagle: Good call! I repaired FPSC, installed v1.18, and it WORKS! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

You're telling me! Our satelite internet router recently stopped working, and we couldn't access the internet even though our computers were saying we had access. Annoying!

Anyway, thank you very much for your help; I will probably put it to use when I decide to uninstall FPSC and it causes the same problems I've been having now.

Ah, yes, speaking of problems, I still have one. I like to run my games without blood. I know and accept the fact that fire-fights are bloody, I just don't think they really belong in my games. So, anyway, this whole problem arose from me trying to remove all the blood decals from FPSC. I can remove the actual decal in the gamecore\decals folder just fine; but if I adjust the FPE's of characters or the bulletholes.tga files in the gamecore\bulletholes folder, FPSC refuses to work properly for me, maybe with some exceptions.

I did not have this problem with v1.17. But I don't want to go back to 1.17!

How else should I try to work around this? I have an idea, but I'm not sure if it will work.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Doesn't setting 'decalmax', in the character's .fpe, to 0 work? Or is that what you're talking about when you say it's what caused your problems in the first place?

Yeah, that's what helped cause the problem in the first place.

But I never thought about setting "decalmax" to zero. I always went the way the Community Guide said to: deleting the "blood" from the "decal1" field. But maybe leaving a field blank was what was causing the problem.

Actually, no, I take that back. Well, actually, it might work, I will test it, that's for sure. But what I mean is... well, let me explain:

I once edited out the blood from one of my model pack's characters, and I also created additional characters that had more modern weapons (modernday soldiers and WW2 weapons don't mix well, do they?). I eventually put these "additional" guys in a separate entitybank folder. When I reinstalled FPSC, I created a back up of that folder. All that was in 1.17.

Fast forward to today with v1.18, everytime I change the FPE's of the guys straight from the model pack, the editor crashes. However, the "additional" who had their FPE's changed back then and were backed up could be brought into the editor just fine with the changes in tact. It's all very weird.

Thanks for sticking this out with me!

Unfortunately I know next to zero about the characters, I can only just find my way round the majority of .fpe files as it is!

I do know there has ben a few compatibility issues with some model packs since 1.18 was released, maybe this is the cause of your problems? Is your model pack an official one, or 3rd party?

@Bruce3371: Kudos to you for the idea! It worked! I changed it to zero and the fire-spot and blood decals didn't show up!

I still wanted the fire-spot decal to show though, so I set "decalmax" to "1" and I got exactly what I wanted! Thank you so much!

All my model packs are official (but probably not for long ), but I was doing to them the same thing I did to the stock characters, so I will try it out and see if it changes at all.

Thanks for the help!
