Hello,

If you are struggling with any aspect of modeling, I have the best place for you to find your answer. here is a list of tutorials available on http://www.blendercookie.com/ I normally would not promote a website under any circumstances, and I receive no commission what so ever for promoting this, but it is just to good of a site to just keep it to myself. This site has high quality videos on every aspect of modeling you would ever think of. and if you don't use blender no problem they have tutorials for the following 3d software programs (BLENDER, 3D MAX and MODO) Trust me you will not find a better place for tutorials anywhere and this is for NOVICE AND EXPERIENCED MODELERS to learn, I am providing a couple screen shoots of just a few of the tutorials they have in each program. it does cost 10$ a month but I think it is well worth the money if you are serious about modeling and if you are thinking about buying an expensive program you might want to check the tutorials out here first because you may still want to pay the hundreds of dollars for 3d max or you may want to use the free program blender, because you will be amazed of the quality of work you can achieve in this free software program, that you may have not thought was possible, well enough talking here are some screenshots. And if you are already a member you know exactly what I am talking about. These screenshots are just a few of the tutorials they have available, with these you will never need to ask a question again about modeling in these programs again and if you have a request for a tutorial they don't cover they will make it, and rather quickly I asked for a basic animation tutorial and it was on the sight the next day, of course lengthy tutorials will take a little longer for them to make but they will do it.

Hello

I have a little dilemma I just finish making this new gun, and its NEW to the world because I made it out of my head, the problem is I can not figure out a good name to call it? Could someone give me some good name for it? It is a low poly model to the poly count is 2234 with a lot of detail to it. But it looks okay I guess, also can you rate my model from 1 to 10 even though it does not have the texture yet. I will tackle that later I still need to UN Wrap it to.

Cheers

You are clearly endorsing this company because you are associated with it. Do not lie about it, and this is not the place to advertise your tutorials.

Dude

They are not my tutorials, I was just trying to help others with modeling. And I said normally I would not promote a website but it is to good to keep to myself, where is the lie in this???

Thanks a lot for these, I'll be able to put a few to good use.

But it does look a lot like they're associated with you, thanks anyway.

I am just a member of the website, just like many others, I have none of my tutorials on this site I only make real short tutorials and they explain a lot, but nothing in comparison to the modelers on this sight, I believe they are all graphic 3d modeling instructors that do this at colleges and online. My favorites are the ones made by jonathan Williamson he explains in very explicit detail the process of modeling in his tutorials, but they are lengthy!

Hey, did you see that weapon I made? Can you comment on it and also do you have any ideas of what I should call it, I made it from scratch, and I am trying to figure out a good name for it a name that is not already associated with a none submachine gun! I am trying to put a weapons collection together that may appear similar to others but unique in it's own way, so I will have a weapons collection like no one else, because modeling a weapon or anything for that matter that has already been invented is boring to me.

I made a few adjustments to my weapon of invention, with no name yet? Still waiting for some feed back on it. I basically extended the butt stock a little and a few adjustments here and there, but all in all I am happy with it. Once I have it UV Unwrapped which will take a little time because I am making probably about 5-6 Different UV Maps because I am making the sections in a 512-512 UV Map so when I texture in gimp the pieces will be large enough to get some good details added to the model, when I get to the Magazine I will include a tutorial on the UV Unwrap and once all parts have been Un Wrapped, I will make a NEW tutorial on texturing using gimp this time. On just the Magazine the whole weapon would take to long. However it will not be today got other things to do but in a few days or so I will make the tutorials and once the weapon is complete I will provide a screenshot of the finished model for review either you hate or like it you be the judge. From here out this thread will be the location for all my tutorials I post I don't want to fill the forum with a bunch of new threads!

Hey guys

Here is some progress on my weapon, I have two screenshots one with shaders and one without shaders, I still need to finish the normal map and spec map, this is the texture with only the color map or the textured map whatever you are familiar with. Once I get to the magazine I will show you in a tutorial how I did the texture.

With no shaders.

Thanks

Its good to here that from a pro like you Cosmic Prophet, one other thing I made some adjustments to the texture I did. I made a new thread so people would come to here to post comments, I told everyone the remainder of my post will be in this thread. I also plan on doing a tutorial in this thread on how I texture using gimp. I have already posted 2 tutorials hopefully it helps some of the members here?

And the textures I used did not come from the internet, I took pictures within my house to make this. So people can see how easy it is to get good textures with just a digital camera, sure some people will be shocked that they could do that? but I am here to share the wealth of knowledge I have in modeling and its not much but I understand some aspects of modeling.

On the new textured piece I used the following textures to make it.

THE BARREL - A PIC OF MY GAS GRILL
THE BODY - A PIC OF MY BASEMENT FLOOR
THE GRID ON THE HANDGRIP - THE FILTER FROM MY BASEMENT FURNACE.

Also I made this weapon up from my head and I am trying to find a good name to call it, I want to give it a name that no other weapon has. since it is unique in its own way. So do you have any suggestions? I am waiting on the forum members to give me a good name!

Cheers!

Okay

Its time for a tutorial, before I make the tutorial on texturing in Gimp for the magazine I will make one on Un wrapping the Magazine first, so lets get started.

First thing I do with my completed model is separate the pieces/ piece from the mesh for UV Unwrap. while in object mode I make the mesh invisible for separation I have selected both the magazine and bullet. And next I want to join those 2 objects just hit the hot key CTRL J to join them as seen below.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Then to hide the remainder of the weapon I will not be working with while still in OBJECT MODE select the hot key SHIFT H this hides the mesh we are not working with. then just hit the TAB key to go into EDIT MODE. then put the object in SOLID MODE, and if you are not in the FACE mode hit CTRL TAB and a drop down appears select FACE. as seen below. then split your screen and make one of the sides UV IMAGE EDITOR. Like this.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

From here the first thing I do is select the hot key U and select RESET make sure the entire mesh is selected. then I go to the UV IMAGE EDITOR and select S and scale it down and move it out of the way for the beginning, this way you know that you did not miss any of the mesh during the UV UNWRAP part. Then once that is done we are ready to put a NEW MAP in place. Select NEW IMAGE as seen from below and the information I put in that map are as seen below.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Once you have imputed all the data in the NEW IMAGE this is what you will see.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Okay, so far so good! then hit the A KEY to deselect the mesh, then hit your C Key and you will see a WHITE CIRCLE appear where the Mouse is then just drag it over the piece you will Unwrap like seen below. Once you selected the piece RIGHT CLICK YOUR MOUSE to deselect the C key then push down on the CENTER MOUSE key to make sure you did not select other FACES you did not want to.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

then hit the hot key U and select PROJECT FROM VIEW. and this is what you will see. then Just grab that new unwrapped object and move it out of the way.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Next thing I do the part I just selected I select H to HIDE JUST THE OBJECT I UN WRAPPED so the rest of my mesh is visible then this is what you will see. then just repeat the above process until just the magazine is complete. At this time I have everything unwrapped from the Magazine except the bottom of it, and since this will not be seen as much as the sides I just select the bottom piece and hit U and RESET, reason being it will be textured but I will not add any detail to this part in gimp so it will just be one color, once you hit the U key and select RESET this is what you will see.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Next thing once everything has been UNWRAPPED for the piece I am working on I select ALT H this unhides all the pieces, and then I just reorganize them, close together and move them out of the UV MAP so they are out of the way. Once you organize everything this is what you get.

NOTE: REMEMBER WHERE YOU PUT THESE PIECES SO YOU DON’T GET THEM MIXED UP AND UNWRAP THE BULLET ON TOP OF THE OTHERS OR IT JUST MAKES IT MORE DIFFICULT TO GRAB THE PIECES.

NOTE: MAKE SURE THESE ARE SELECT BELOW IN THE SCREEN SHOT, SO WHEN YOU DONT HAVE THE MESH SELECTED YOU CAN STILL SEE THE PARTS THAT HAVE BEEN UNWRAPPED.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Next thing to do that mesh we just organized we need to HIDE it so we will only see the BULLET so make sure just the unwrapped object is selected then hit H. Then this is what you should only see. just repeat the process like before and then once it is UNWRAPPED, we are going to organize all our pieces onto our MAP if you have a piece you will be adding detail to make it larger, but make sure two like pieces are the same size or very close. And the way to rotate the object without a lot of trial and error is just select one side of an object and hit R 180 then RR 180 then both meshes are on the same side then just hit S to scale it to about the same size as the other, once they are close to the same then put it back into its position by hitting R 180 and RR 180 on the keyboard.

Okay where doing good, at this time once you have UNWRAPPED everything and Organized the pieces you should have something like this, you will notice the only piece that is rather small is that bottom piece that will not have any detail to it.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

At this time we are ready to make the MAP we will be using to make our texture with, in order to do this make sure all FACES are selected on your mesh, then go to the bottom of the UV MAP screen and select UVs as seen in the screenshot then select EXPORT UV LAYOUT. Then just save the image as whatever name you want I just called it MAGAZINE.PNG Then just go to where you saved the file and you should have this. Then just save in blender and close blender for the time being, because the next part will be done in Gimp. and thats it to UV UNWRAPPING, and as you will have noticed I did this without using any seems, by just using the hide key.

Here is an update to my texturing of my weapon, and yes I did the magazine but I still going to do the tutorial on the magazine, but with some extra details so you can see what can be done in gimp. but for the time being I only have time to show a quick update to the texture I did, because writing out the tutorial and inputting images from image shack takes a little time. Comments please of my progress thus far, thank you!

And one thing you will notice on the magazine I put the bullet in it backwards, lol never noticed that when I was making it, but no problem I will just turn it around when I finish her up, Cheers!

Okay

Here it is the tutorial on how I texture in Gimp, using some pictures around my house to make the textures. The three textures below are all I will be using to make my color map.

Textures.

1. A picture of a water barrel in my back yard.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

2. A picture of my marble finished basement floor.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

3. the last one is a picture of the handle on my gas grill.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

4. all other added items I will be using are all available in the tools provided by gimp.

With that lets get started.

1. first thing we are going to make is two copies of that UV Map we made in blender. and name them so you remember what each one is call, for tutorials purposes lets name them map 1 and map 2. once you have done that open map 1 with gimp.

2. Now that we have gimp open with MAP 1 we are going to turn that map into a media inclusion map. the way we are going to do that is in the layers panel and create a new layer, then go to the toolbox panel and click on the icon that looks like a paint bucket, by default the color should be black, just hold the paint bucket over your map and click the entire screen should have turned black, then just go over to the layers panel and click on the green arrow at the bottom and bring your media inclusion map to the top and right click on the media inclusion map and select merge down, you have just made a media inclusion map, or the base for your texture template.

3. Now go to the upper left of your screen and click on file then select open as layers... then just find map 2 and you will notice in the layers panel it is the top template, while you have the map 2 selected just drag the opacity over to “0” then click on the other map and change it from normal to overlay. as seen below. now we are ready to start adding textures and detail to our map

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

4. Okay, at this point if you have not found some pictures you are going to use, stop here and get your camera out and start snapping some pictures around your house, and if you want to see how well this will turn out do this then come back and don’t cheat and just do a google search!

5. Okay you got your pictures great, so lets continue. what I am going to do is open those 3 pictures I have and open each one by clicking on file then open as layers... until all three textures are in the layers panel, then once we have done that turn off the visibility of each one of the textures you just added, by simply clicking on the EYEBALL icon for each texture and it will disappear. this way we can edit each one individually.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

6. Next what we are going to do is on the media inclusion map we are going to box select all the items that will have out base texture on the magazine only, we will do the bullet separately since it will be gold in color. the way we do this is hold the shift key and drag the mouse over all parts of the model you are working with once you have finished it should look something like this.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

7. next thing I will do is in the toolbar panel select the icon that looks like a magic wand, and hold it over the map and hold the CTRL key and double left click your mouse button, and then it has just outlined your parts of the model, it should look something like this

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

8. Okay at this time we are ready to add the base color to our map, the way we are going to do this is simply in the layers panel turn on the visibility of the base color and make sure it is highlighted or you will be selecting the wrong texture, once you have it selected simply go to the edit key in the upper left of the screen and copy the texture, then turn off the visibility of that texture you just copied then select and highlight your map, and simply go to the edit key once again and paste the texture in there, then in the layers panel you will see a new panel is present called floating selection simply right click on that panel and select anchor layer, you just finished your base texture. and it will look something like this.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

9. at this time we are finished with the base color, you can go ahead and delete it from the layers panel, so you have more room to work with, however if you want to add it to something else just leave it there.

10. Okay at this time you can either do one of two things find a picture of a magazine, to help you determine where you want to add details or just make your own design as I am going to do. and what I am going to use is a picture of that water barrel to add some detail to my model. same thing applies select the visibility of the detail picture you are going to use to add to your map, but this time leave both the water barrel picture and your maps visibility on. but make sure you have the water barrel highlighted or you will be adjusting the wrong map. and basically what I am going to do is scale it to where I want it and also move it, just use the move and scale tool in the toolbar to make these adjustments and once you have got it to where you want it, it should simply look like this. however we want this new detail to blend into our base texture simply slide the opacity over to the left until it has blended to your liking. then once it is to your liking copy it, then turn off the visibility of that detailed item and click on your map and paste it, then just copy it and paste it for the other side of the magazine as well and this is what you get. as you should be able to notice the detail of the barrel is now on my map.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

11. Okay this next part will take some practice, we want to give the illusion of shadows in a 3 dimensional view, and simply this is a matter of light and dark colors placed in strategic locations throughout the model to give that illusion of raised and lowered items in 3d.

12. here is an example of what I am talking about you will see below one map that is correct and the other is in correct when attempting to achieve an illusion.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

13.Okay with that explanation you should have a better idea, just keep in mind to do this you will need to go to the toolbox and select the paint brush icon and just play around with the possible choices from icons, opacity, scale and color as seen below.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

14. I will be using some of these techniques on my project and you should see somewhat of an illusion in certain areas that give an illusion of depth.

15. from the below screenshot you should see some of the shading I added to the magazine using the above technique, like I said it takes practice but once you get it to where you want it gets better through time, just remember practice makes perfect. and I am not a pro at it but I get better each time.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

16.next thing you may want to give it a dirty look or darker look or ad a new color to it, you can do that by going to the toolbox and click on your paintbrush and click on the black dot and pic one of the dirt looks they have available. I am using the one seen below to give it not only a dirty look but darker look as well. you can see it is much dirtier and darker after I added these textures.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

17.lets say we want to add a text on our magazine, use what ever you want. simply go to the toolbox click on the big A then a menu appears you can change the color, font, and size here. then click on the area of your texture you want to add the texture and you can drag it to where you want it and scale it out and have the writing go to the left or the right your choice.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

18.Okay, that completes the magazine, now its time for the bullet we will use the same technique for the shading but the other parts will be a little different.

19. Okay, we have a little problem our texture for the bullet is silver but we know that a bullet is yellow or gold-ish in color, so we need to change the color of our texture and what we are first going to do is turn on the visibility of the item we are using for our bullet and then turn off all the other items in our layers panel, this is what you should see.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

20. at this time click on colors at the top of the screen and select colorize, then simply change the HUE only to about 35. then you should have something like this.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

21. at this time we are ready to add this texture to our bullet. simply that item we just turned gold we are going to box select that item and cut it from the original piece we turned gold then make a new layer and paste it in there, then delete the old texture. once we have done that we are going to select our gold texture and leave our texture open and move it in line with our bullet, you should see something like this. and basically copy and paste as needed of course it will not look like your bullet 100% but it gets the texture in there. then you can start adding detail to it. and if you need to see how the outline of your texture looks like just go to the top template we added and turn the opacity up a little if you want to add a color to the tip of the bullet, and the same process applies in adding shading, dirt look and darker as previously discussed.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

22. and all you need to do is delete all the added texture templates and you should only have your UV Map and media inclusion map just merge them together and thats it. also make sure you turn your opacity back up before merging. or you will see the lines in your texture.

23. and this is what it looks like on the weapon in blender. I have turned off all shaders so you can see the full details of the texture map and you can see the illusion the shading I showed you on the areas I made scratches the screw and depth areas. its still flat but it appears 3d. I hope this was educational and helpful. and of course you can increase the illusion when making the normal map and spec map.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/img]

I TRIED TO MAKE THIS AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE PUT NOT BY LEAVING A LOT OF EXPLANATION OUT, SO IF THERE IS ANY PART OF THIS TUTORIAL YOU DID NOT UNDERSTAND PLEASE LET ME KNOW, AND I WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION HERE ON THIS THREAD, BUT ALL IN ALL I HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL AND EDUCATIONAL, HOWEVER THIS IS ONLY ONE WAY OF TEXTURING IN GIMP, THERE ARE MANY OTHERS BUT I PREFER THIS ONE, I JUST WANTED TO SHOW YOU HOW COMMON HOUSEHOLD GOODS CAN MAKE A GOOD COLOR MAP FOR YOUR OBJECT YOU ARE MAKING. PLEASE COMMENT ON MY TUTORIAL IF YOU LIKED IT OR NOT OR ANY RECOMMENDATIONS, I JUST WANT TO HELP THE FREE LANCE ARTIST OUT THERE THAT MAY OR MAY NOT WANT TO MAKE A GO AT THIS.

AND JUST REMEMBER THE ONLY STUPID QUESTION IS A QUESTION NOT ASKED, I WILL NOT JUDGE YOU FOR YOUR QUESTION I WILL JUST ATTEMPT TO ANSWER IT.

Honestly, this should probably be in the 3D Chat forum, seeing as these don't tie directly to FPSC.

Not saying they aren't helpful, far from it, just in the wrong spot.

BTW, the texture on your mag there has way to much noise. You should try going for a more flat texture, or micro-noise (like rescale your texture way down). Then go back over and do some scuff marks, scratches, highlights whatever, on the edges, to show wear and tear.

Try taking a look at these...

Good model though! Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments, and that link, and the noise is just because that the color of my basement floor and my attempt was not to get a perfect look but to show by taking pictures in your own house you can create a texture, and yes you are correct it does have a bit to much noise perhaps I will adjust it, and for being in 3d chat I already started this thread and I will just continue using this thread so I don't clog up the forum with a bunch of threads, and this tutorial will be related to fpsc because I am making this a series from uv to game ready so I plan on doing the whole process of getting fpsc ready, but I do appreciate your comments.

Cheers!

Here is a new update to my texture on my model, and yea it may appear a bit to noisy but thats okay, I am still learning, the only thing left to texture is my gun sights, and for King Fluffs giving me a name for the weapon it is on the side of the weapon its called the G-111 HELIOMORTAR.

Okay

The weapon is finished all I need to do is make the normal and spec map for the weapon and I have already provided a tutorial on that plus I believe their is one by bond1 on how that is achieved, my next tutorial with this series will be the following.

1. Animation
2. and make it FPSC ready with shaders. but this is the screenshot of the sight and finished model, it's not perfect but I am making this for tutorial purposes and in some of the areas of the weapon I exaggerated to show the different options available in gimp, you probably don't want to use a texture with so much noise in it when you texture your weapon, so far I hope this has been educational to new modelers in achieving what you want.

The model is also a low poly after UV Unwrapping it you can remove faces that are inside and it went from 2200 to 1917 on the poly count, so you can achieve a lot of detail while maintaining a low poly count the key is using cylinders and cubes, and that's it. it will be a little longer for the next tutorials I have some up coming business but I will post them.

Gun looks great man. I know I'm late on the name but When I first saw it "AR-PB96" popped into my head. AR = Assault Rifle, PB96=PizzaBoy96. Nice job. Can't wait to see it in game.

Hey guys

I was going to do a tutorial on making the human hand as we will need it for the weapon, but it would take too long to explain, so instead once I finish it I will provide it as a FREE download that anyone can use ROYALTY FREE. however it will not be textured and will not be UV Unwrapped, I got to let you guys do a little of the work, and if you use it on a mesh to sell in any store just mention that the hand was designed by me with full royalty free rights.

One other thing this will ONLY be the hand not the arm, reason being you may want to add a glove to it or make the arm big or small your choice, this allows you to mess around with it, and the arm is very simple to extrude and shape since it is only one extension of the body and does not have additional joints like fingers and toes. it will be a few days but it only takes about 30-45 minutes to complete so when I have a little spare time I will make it, then put the download in here.

pizza delivered
cheers!

Okay

here is the free download it is a 3ds file, so all you need to do is import it into your 3d program and work with any adjustments you want to make, this is being distributed with full free copyrights, so feel free to use it anyway you want, I did this without a reference other than looking at my own hand in making it, it took about 10 minutes to make its nothing fancy but it is free. enjoy!

Your Pizza has been delivered, I hope this works? the download that is!

here are a couple of screenshots of it too.

cheers!

I was worried there for a minute, about my upload however this upload is FREE to view on blender cookies website, and you are able to view it with no problem, unfortunately it is copyrighted and under no circumstance are you allowed to use this hand model as it is copyrighted to Jonathan Williamson but the tutorial is FREE to use so instead of giving you a FREE hand model watch the tutorial and make your own, I apologize for any inconvenience, but when I initially uploaded using the Uploader Applet I uploaded the wrong file twice and anyways you get more out of modeling if you do all the work on your own, so perhaps it was a mistake but it is in your best interest. this is the website I learned to model from and perhaps you can to as of right now the majority of the tutorials on this site are free to view so if I where you I would take advantage of this if I where you.

Hey guys

Apparently, I am going to have to continue this tutorial series on a new thread? It appears that you can only put so much in one thread then it slows way down because some of the screenshots take a long time to load or they don't appear in the thread so I will continue this series in 3D Chat since someone said this should be there, it will be a week or two since I need to go out of town on business for a week or two but I will be back, this is just a part time hobby I have, because I got a job too.
