I've noticed when I use the AGKPlayer on my iOS devices (Iphone4 & iPad2), the images look terrible. There are some pretty serious banding issues that are not present in the image on my PC. Is the AGKPlayer running in 16-bit color for some reason?

Well, the old Ipod and Iphone were running in 16-bit, not sure if it is still the same.

Can you take an iOS snapshot and post it here so we can see. Thanks.

I drink tea, and in my spare time I write software.

Sure Lee. The gradient image on the left is the original, from my PC and looks perfectly fine on the PC Player. The image on the right is a screenshot from my iPhone of the same app running on the iOS Player. The original is a PNG file. It's almost as if all images are being being converted to a highly compressed JPG format or as I mentioned before, the iOS player is running 16-bit color.

Thanks much.

Whats the resolution of your original image?

If it's much bigger than the screen resolution, or the virtual resolution if you're using that, and you are scaling it to fit the screen then that will happen.

The image is 320x480.

I've setup a resolution of 320x480 in my program:

setvirtualresolution (320,480)

The setup.agk file is set to:

width=320
height=480

So I wouldn't think it is a scaling issue.

Does this happen when you use non-white gradients?

I've not seen this before so I'm not sure what's causing it, maybe this will help http://www.cocos2d-iphone.org/forum/topic/13227

I noticed that effect on my iPad1 as well. Alien, for testing I saved the same image as PNG instead and, although it is not the same that the one shown on my PC, it looks almost perfect on iPad now. Not a solution, but a good workaround.

Cheers

I noticed it here too...

Steven Holding's WIP

...it seems the gradient is the problem.
I experienced banding on a netbook, so at first it doesn't seem to be the phone's fault.
However, I did not experience it on my laptop, so we can blame it on the device.

Yeah, or blame it on scaling.
Just don't blame AppGameKit
