Hi,

Can anyone recommend any good graphics creation software that is particularly good for drawing 2D graphics for use in games? (especially for mobile games).

Something that can be used for drawing animated sprites, new font maps, backgrounds would be especially good.

I spotted Pro Motion on the TGC website and wondered if anyone had used that and if so, what do you think?

Thanks,

Red.

For font maps, there are a few programs being made here in DBPro.

For graphics, there are dozens of 2D drawing programs. I use Paint Shop Pro 9, because it's much cheaper than Photoshop, but can still use Photoshop plugins. Others might suggest something like GIMP, but that interface drives me nuts. So I guess it's up to your budget and personal preference.

Pro Motion looks quite good. I haven't used it yet, but given the kinds of things I'm doing with AppGameKit, I probably should check it out.

I always use paint shop pro 7 as i love it!

I have also looked a great deal at promotion as it seams to be really good for all your 2d neads.

Here is 2 free ones.

free audio recording software is here.

Graphics Gale is well regarded I believe. If you want to do animation, you need to check the software offers features such as onion-skinning.

Thanks for your input.

I've got GIMP but like you the UI drives me nuts, it is very awkward to use; although I'm sure if I persevered it would get easier.

I used to have an older version of PhotoShop but found it more geared toward photo manipulation and doing more advanced graphics than what would typically be required for mobile games and I did once use a very early version of PSP.

Looking at the spec's, I think Pro Motion could be ideal, I will give it a try - I'll let you know what I think of it.

I love Graphics Gale, I do all of my basic editing in it. It also comes in very handy when adding an alpha channel.

Tile Studio isn't too bad either and I believe it has a map editor as well.

My computer came with Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 and it isn't too bad but you are right, it is geared towards photo editing.

I just checked out Aviary, they look like excellent tools, especially considering they are browser based but I think they are not quite what I'm look for right now.

I have looked at several tools thus far and the one that is at the top of my list is Pro Motion, I'll get that and update you on what I think.

Thanks for your suggestions

I use a bunch of graphics software. Amongst them are: Paintshop Pro X3, Gimp, Painter photo essentials 4, CorelDRAW Essentials 5.
And, just recently (today actually), I've managed to install CorelDRAW 7 (complete version) on Windows 7, which didn't work on Vista. Whooooohoooooooo.
Man, I loved that program. And, even its an old program (Windows 95), its still a great graphics suite.
I've tried many graphics programs, and they all have their pros and cons. Best is to find the right one(s) for you and master them.

Cheers

One of the best pixel artist in Norway, use MS Paint. He don't like any other programs, as he is only pushing pixels manually anyway Maybe I should do my AppGameKit coding in Notepad...
