When in my level, if I am facing the direction where the majority of the remaining level exists my polygon count goes crazy. This happens regardless if I am in a tiny room completely closed off. Why is this and how do I stop it?

make sure to add little hallways in between larger rooms. this should help. also make sure to not make the whole level in 1 direction

i have my own little saying. imagine fps creator levels are like a Gold Fish Bowl.

when your on the outside the game engine has to work out all the surroundings and add them all at once, But when your on the in side looking out then the farthest/furthest part of the scenery in front of you is only calculated, Ie from what you see, and the scenery behind you has not been calculated to the full extent.

But if you have higher buildings then your cutting down some of the calculations from the top part of the gold fish bowl so to speak.
and again if you add like partitions or other hallways in the middle, then again this help reduce the game engine from calculating too much scenery in one go, you can also add invisible segments, for this do a seach and there are many tpics on this invisble subject.

Also try using billboards for around the edges of your map or even in the middle bits, as they are extremly low data, and it helps fill in more of the map without increasing to much of calculations to the engine.

Note: No fish was harmmed/hurt during/ tesing my way, Just to let you animal right's people know that.

Just kidding, i could not resist saying that hehehe LOL

I'am not GOD but i can make you see again by taking my fingers out of your eyes and i can make you walk again by taking your beer away, but if you take my beer you will not walk again
