Hey everyone ,

I'm thinking about purchasing but have a few questions first. I want to know if I can design my own custom levels with an external 3d modeler. Basically I want to take some 3ds or .X files and import them as into FPS creator. I also want to know if once they are imported can I add custom scripts to them and make them entities.

If this can't be done with an external modeler are there any tools provided by the game creators for this purpose. Thanks for any help.

Fpsc is a very decent game software Depending on the user You can use something like blender to make your levels and models there is a program that can import your models to fpsc not sure the name of it atm has been a long day as for scripts they are used for animation of the model if there is any or some other function there is a lot you can do with it.

======================================
My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.

Look at projects like Dark House where rolfy does just that, creates his levels in external programs, bakes in lighting and shadows, and imports them into FPSC. He adresses your questions in the link I provided.

only rule: use the segment floors, even when they are under your modeled floor. ai-entities have problems moving on other entities instead of segments. same for walking stairs, you needs segments around them. but you can do them invisible, so no problem.

In all honesty; If you're looking to be a bit more serious, rather than just have a bit of fun yourself, FPSC probably isn't the best option. While it is both easy to grab a hold of and fun to use, compared to some other (free might I add) game development software, such as UDK, the final product of FPSC would be something of an arcade game.

If you want to quickly and easily create a small game, and have fun at the same time, choose FPSC

If you are feeling a little more serious about Game Development, and want to create a final product that is of a very high, almost industry standard, then choose an alternative.

FPSC CAN do the things that you want. But it was not set up to do so, and chance of framerate problems is very high, almost expected.

I have nothing against this engine, however biased I may sound, but the fact is, it doesn't compete well with other engines on a commercial basis.

So we can better answer your question, what software are you planning to make the level in?

jo

As a semi newbie(about a year) to fps creator I would say that for learn the basics of how a game is designed. How to get what's in your head into a game and tell a rather convincing story through the character's eyes. Now there are plenty of games and video's of what the combination of FPSC and various modeling software can accomplish. That being said FPSC can be a bit quirky at times and must I say a bit frusterating. But overall if your looking to "learn the Ropes" of designing a game and also telling a story through imersion. Then try it out. If your looking to create the next greatest 3ps then this might not be for you.

Or any game for that matter.
I hate to sound biased again, But FPSC just simply does not have that power or capability.

You're correct titanium FPSC in and of itself can't do much. However, couple it with a user who has some talent and suddenly it can do great things. You should check out some of the showcase board games if you think nothing can be made in FPSC!

Also, I see nowhere in the original post where mention is made if making a commercial game. You know what they say about making assumptions.

Perhaps, like some here, he would like a quick and easy way to preview and navigate his 3d models or environment. Perhaps, he has already made up his mind and we are wasting our time talking about it.

I don't mean to be picking arguments, but I thought I would try to respond to thraxas in the best way possible.

I do relaize that great games have been made with FPS Creator. For example, all of the BOTB games are great to play, a lot of fun.

Without any information in the first post as to what the OP really wants to do, I thought I would provide a perspective of each.

And now my final recomendation;
Jojoofu; go to the showcase board, download a few, and see what you think. First, I would download a relatively new showcase game, as it is likely the 'average representation' of what people can do in the engine. Then move on to a BOTB title (Best of the Best), and give one of those a play. Someone with a BOTB title likely means that they have pushes FPSC to its limits in one regard, be it polygons in scene, voice acting, puzzling levels, etc.
Once you see the kind of product that FPSC can create, then it might help you make your decision, as you can see what a final product would be like.

I wasn't trying to pick an argument. I was responding to
Quote: "Or any game for that matter."
which I read as FPSC is not capable of making any game.

Ahhh I see.
What I meant in that line was referring to
Quote: "next greatest 3ps"
(next greatest[any game for that matter] , which is the part I feel FPSC is not completely up to.

A simple misunderstanding
