Anyone know why my game only works in Windows 98 mode? If it is not set to this mode, it crashes after a few seconds. I'm pretty sure it isn't the sparky's collision plugin. I do have a lot of arrays and float variables which would take up memory, but why would it work under 98 mode and nothing else? Any thoughts? Any similar problems? Here's the download link. I'd be thankful for any help at all.
It only needs Windows 98 mode if it's running on Vista or 7.
EDIT: And I am now positive it is not Sparky's Collision.

Have you changed drivers lately? Have you upgraded to DBP U77? Have you got admin rights? etc, etc, etc...

Sounds like this could be one of many reasons.

It won't work on any computer unless it is set to Windows 98 mode. Admin rights doesn't matter. I just downloaded U77, but I don't really know what that is. I complied it and I had the same problem. Is it just a different editor, or is the compiler different? I've tried it on many computers. The only way it works is Windows 98 mode. If you can solve this problem, I'll give you 1 million dollars.
EDIT: I won't give you 1 million dollars.

I tried replacing all the BMPs but it still crashed. Only BMPs the problem, or have JPGs changed, too? Thanks for all the quick responses, though!
I just need this problem fixed or I'll be worried that my game won't work under future versions of windows.

It is very weird that I'm the only one who has this problem. Is it because I have lots of global variables? Why does it not crash under Windows 98 mode? I've been working on this game for almost 4 years and I want to make it compatible with modern Windows.

Or possibly there's a plugin you're using (a very old one) that might be linked to a win98 library. I could imagine you've practically exhausted nearly every possibility...

There is definitely something wrong with the DarkBasic sourcecode. My program works perfectly if you run it in Windows 98 mode. However, I believe my particular case has something to do with opening multiple text files at the same time, which I use as scripts. I've been testing it all night and I hope I'll come up with a specific answer in a couple days.

Thanks for all the quick help, by the way. That was some intense trouble shooting, but now I am too drunk so I will watch videos. Good night.

What line is causing the crash? You should trap out where it is happening.

Fingers crossed and after sobering up you've had some flash of inspiration and figured it out. My reckoning is it could be an old plugin that may not be compatible with the new DBP upgrades.

OK, it seems the exit command causes a crash, so I commented them all out and the program got a little further. There is still something else causing crashes, however. I'll post more when I find it.

Are you perhaps returning literal strings from any functions? ex:

Whoo! Revenant Chaos, thanks for the tip. I think it works fine, now, but I will playtest it for a while. I thought I had removed all the exitfunction "blah" commands a long time ago but apparently there was 1 left. I think that solves it. Now people won't think they're playing a really old engine when they have to set it to Windows 98 mode.
Still, I have to playtest it for a while.

@revenant chaos
Is that a known issue? I've never heard of that before, but I rarely return strings. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

Yep, I remember reading it in a few different places here on the forums.
