For the past few weeks I've been following tutorial after tutorial researching how to get shaders to work in my game. While some of the stock shaders or 3rd party shaders (bond1's containment room for example) work to a certain extent, others are failing miserably. I'm getting textures that are all black or have artifacts all over them and any number of different issues. I've been very meticulous in following every video and written tutorial and am confidant that this is not user error. I look at other user's videos, screenshots, etc and things just don't match up on my screen even on the shaders that work. I can provide screenshots or video if someone is interested in seeing specifics, but suffice to say it's not pretty.

What I've come to find out through research is that I'm having hardware incompatibilities with certain shader versions. I've found discussions on the forums about ATI video cards not mixing well with FPSC which has prompted me to post this thread. However, the video card I'm using has little problem with commercial game shaders even if it runs a bit slower (it's a bit of a budget card). So I've come to the point where either I give up on using shaders in my game or I upgrade my video card.

So I appeal to the community for advice regarding what I should upgrade to (I'm guessing strictly nvidia chipset cards?) or any and all suggestions. Thank you to anyone that replies!

I have a 6950 2gb.

ps2.0 stuff gives problems, but I notice it's generally not the card, because removing the shader gives more problems. also replacing EAI's ps2 and 3 shaders with something stock like bumpcubereflectalpha yields something nice looking, and works perfectly.

Just get an Nvidia card and be done with it. You get Physx and perfect FPSC support that just works - no fretting whether the latest driver update will suddenly break something. A good midrange card is the GTX 560 which can be found for under $200. The GTX 550 is a bit cheaper option. Both cards have more than enough power for anything FPSC can throw at them.

Hey guys,
Im having problems with my HD Radeon 5770 1GB. And i was looking to buy a new card. I found this card for a reasonable price:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=41126&csid=_23

Is that a good card? Should i get a better card than that? Does anyone have this card or something similar? What games can it run? Sorry im just not liking ATI anymore, and i want something new.

Thanks,
- Josh

That's a decent card at a decent price.

ALTHOUGH, if you can spare just a bit more, this would give you 20-30% better performance for only $20 more, this would be the one I would buy: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6623375&CatId=3669

Awesome! Thanks for the suggestions! That's actually one of the three cards I was looking into getting, bond1... your post about ATI cards having issues with ps2.0 was actually what prompted me to make this post... thanks for pointing me in the right direction

why change to nvidia?
I have an ATI card in and still everything concerning FPSC works perfectly.
Also my older card (4870) works with all shaders available and the one I wrote, so it's just a problem some people have. But I told this many times now and still everyone blames ati.

ATI is all we ever use. We have an ATI Radeon 4650 1 GB on our Vista desktop, and never had any issues with shaders or FPSC. You are correct- it does depend on the specific problem the user is having and what drivers they might have installed. Our Acer laptop uses an AMD Radeon 6250 (sometimes also called ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6250) and it too has no issues, although the video memory is a bit low on that one.

Well im not really having problems with FPSC, but i just really want to play Brink (if anyone knows what that is). Everyone says it sucks, but it really is good! But the game like does not support ATI cards at all..

So that is one of the main reasons why i want to get a Nvidia. But i also am saving up for a new guitar so im still thinking about what i should get.

Thanks for responding guys!

Weird. Works on my system with the ATI Radeon 4650 (running on Vista).

From their system requirements support section:

Quote: "Minimum Specifications Info System Requirements: Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz or equivalent Memory: 2GB RAM Graphics: NVIDIA 8800GS / AMD Radeon HD 2900 Pro or equivalent OS: Windows XP(SP3)/Vista/Windows 7 Hard Drive: 8GB of free space"

@BlackFox - I will take a screenshot, i seriously get around 15 framerate with a resolution of 800x600 and details set to very low (my computer is 1920x1080 normally). So i have no idea how you ran that with a Radeon 4650, What are the rest of the specs for your computer? Here are mine:

CPU - AMD Phenom X3 1.9GHz
RAM - 4GB DDR2 800MHz
OS - Windows 7 64bit
HD - 1TB Western Digital
GPU - HD Radeon 5770 1GB

@Soviet176 - You have had no problems because if i remember right you have a badass computer. The 6970 is up there with the top of the line stuff. How much was that? Like $200?

I have bought and used both brands ATI and Nvidia over the years and haven't had a Problem Running FPSC with either brand, but I've always used the latest drivers and Direct X, and I always made sure I didn't have a bunch of programs running in the background eating up all my system resources either, you know all the little Icons in the bottom right corner of your desktop, the more you have the more system resource they are using up and some programs that run in the background don't even show up there, they can have a dramatic effect on how FPSC will run on your system. I don't like programs that set themselves up to run on windows start up, I only want a program to run when I want it to run and not when it wants to, If I install and program and it wants to run on windows start up I usually disable it, the only one that should be running on start up is your antivirus.

Best
