I'm taken the best parts from minecraft / terraria and mcmods . To make a game that is more forcus on crafting / build large complex ( secret ) stuff.

the prolems that i'm having is deciding the gui style , map Height / map fix or gen like in minecraft.

GUI:
there are 2 style i'm thing about grid based like in minecraft / terraria. The other is a large sorted list like in most modern rpg. If i do the list i could limited to amout you can carry by each item has it's own weight.

World Height:
The tile size i'm useing is 16 by 16 with the height limit of 128 is just to small. what height do you want to see? ( 256 , 512 , 1024 ,larger ).

world width:
An fix size world would be my first choice for easy of making the game but i do like the look of large maps.

game progress so far
Player movment , player colliding with blocks , player animation , item / weapon / pickaxe animation. Blocks place within world , animation tall grass that is removed with the weapon / pickaxe and finaly some changes to the code for speed.

FPS:
i have to say i'm using a old pc ( 2-3 years old )
800x600 full screen 300-150 fps
800x600 windows 200 to 80 Fps
The bottleneck in the game was how I display the World. about 45 Fps before the changes. There are other changes that i could make to get a lot more fps that's for later. The large drop from 300 to 150 fps happens when falling a long way.

screen shot / demo:
sorry no screen shot's or a demo right now. I'm using paintlypack ( minecraft texturepack ) and a sprite sheet from the terraria fourm as place holder graphics. There are both copyrighted so i can't post screen shot / demo with them in.

An "old PC" is at least ~5 years old...

-In.Dev.X: A unique heavy story based shoot'em ~35%
-CoreFleet: An underground commander unit based RTS ~15%
-TailsVSEggman: An Sonic themed RTS under development for idea presentation to Sega ~15%

So you're looking for advice on GUI style? World size?

Kind of hard to advise on these considering we don't know what the game looks like. Unless it's a direct copy of minecraft, since you're using the textures I will assume it is?

My advise would be to try to be different. Try to make it your own and if you make it different enough maybe you can market it. Not too many people will be interested in a clone of minecraft unless it's better in some way...

I hope that doesn't sound too negative it's supposed to be constructive

an old pc is when you have trouble playing some of you favourite games.

You do have a point by making a different game other people will think of it not just aother clone / remake of it. I just want to get a basic workable version of the game out there for comments / idears . before i start changes parts and add new stuff to it. I'm making the game for fun and not for selling it.

I have started to change the graphics to a blocky charator syle. needed to keep the hand position data for item/weapon. It turns out that the charator look like rayman with more blocky style. still look nice to me. There is a prolem with the number of hand position. I need more to get a more smoother animation.

I have just finished replacing all the graphics that i used from paintlypack and from terraria fourm. In the download is the screen shot.

What is in the screen shot . 4 blocks typs , 2 background blocks , hotbar , weapon / player / grass animation.

Sorry if you think I was being too obvious but not everyone finds that so obvious.

The screenshot looks great and not too similar to terraria, although I'm sure you have even more ideas for that.

I would try to keep the menu very similar to the general graphics of the game. Use simple fonts and thick lines / edged boxes. Maybe by fading the colours of the GUI slightly it will stand out against the stark colours of the game? A slight shadow would also help, maybe a slightly transparent blocky shadow:

baxslash... thanks for the image. I'm going with a style of a list grid based inventory ( eg. Dark cloud 2 inventory , great game ) on left side of the screen. on the right is chests , workbench , etc. on the bottom of the screen is the horbar / quick select. I will do what you have said about the GUI should look like.

It will take me a while to make the GUI. I will be playing cod: black ops ( double xp weekend ).
