Hi, I was wondering about when you finish a game, with all the media in folders, how would you make it so you don't distribute all the media when you distribute the game? Do you use that
"media" browser in DBpro? If so, how does it work?

KTHX

You might take a look at this thread. It's a place to start:

Also when you use a standard installer, it should install files and directories for you.

If you look under the "Properties" panel in the new editor and set "Application Type" to "media", any media you add to the project by selecting "Import" in the "Media" panel will be compiled into the executable so you don't have to send those files out with the exe.

But how do you utilize the built-in media in your program?

You use the same code for loading the objects / images / audio you would use to load it normally.

The new editor is the one with the TGC logo in the "Editor" directory. It used to be called "Synergy" but they updated it and shipped it with DBPro as the "new editor".

When you say "distribute all the media", do you mean you don't want to allow other people to easily have access to your media? Obviously your program needs the media included with it otherwise it would be unable to load it.

Regardless of how you package your game, you will still end up exposing your media files. Even including them in the exe (Which is an Idea I have never liked) they get extracted to a temp folder before executing the program.

If you really do not want your media available then you need to look at some kind of encryption. Although this will probably increase loading times a bit.

At a minimum level, you could consider renaming all your files something like "datablock0001.dat".

Another option of course is to not encrypt or hide anything but include a license agreement that the user agrees to by downloading the game. If they use the media in any way for commercial purposes then you can sue them.

I'd personally be flattered if someone wanted to use my media for their own game...

In fact if anyone does want any media from my games that I own the rights to they can just ask and they can have a copy

I bought smart packer pro... it helps avoid this issue however I dislike the autoupdate mechanism... but it works... but as someone mentioned... sorry using phone right now... but you can rename files to obscured names and only you will know the actual filetype... but you can also use the memblock approach... I am still investigating the best approach for both media protection as well as self updating...
Until I somewhat perfect these two aspects I will not be making anything public...

@baxslash

I don't find "Properties" in any menu or a "Properties Panel".

My editor indicates the build to be Oct 2, 2008. But it uses the Dark Basic logo.

Is that the one?

Also, a lot of my media is purchased and the license requires that I obscure the media from the user. So I don't have a choice. I must make the files obscured in some way.

It's this one in the Dark Basic installation folder under the "Editor" folder:
