Geek Culture / Escaping the British winter, how to go abroad for cheap cost?

I want to escape the winter cold of the UK, I really need a change in scenery, I would be nice to leave the UK for somewhere warmer for 3 weeks, I like to do my own cooking and need internet access as I am planning on learning AppGameKit while escaping Britains winter gloom.

Any suggestions?

southern queensland Australia,
average 25-30c days, at night: sleep without cover + fan = awesome. hot enough that you can get up without hassle, you can go out and the weather is definitly hot, but take a dip in the ocean or pool and you will feel better.

no crocs, no box jellyfish, no jumping jacks.

go backpackers and get a temporary dishpig or hotel housekeeping job. should tie you over nicely for 3 weeks.

In Aussie you would not be able to pick up a hotel housekeeping job just like that, also the air fare from the UK to Australia would be huge, so I don't think it would be practical, even though it would be nice to visit Australia I don't think it would be practical.

Aussie land is a wee bit expensive, a 24 hour flight too I think. My sister stayed there for 3 weeks a few years back, she had to save up all her pennies for the trip.

I'd probably pick somewhere a lot closer to save money. Probably France and Spain are good choices. My colleague was gonna go to Spain this week for his holiday, apparently the weather is still good over there. I went a couple of years ago (in August, not as late as December) I wouldn't say it was too expensive for a holiday, we stayed in quite a nice hotel and the guy who served us breakfast looked like one of the Goodfellas and we got drunk at restaurant apparently Bill Clinton went to.

Though I paid 20 euros for 2 Jack Daniels, probably a little pricey, however, you do tend to get a good value on what you buy and their idea of a Jack Daniels is not a small shot at the bottom of the glass you get in the UK, but rather, a quite generous helping.

For 20 Euros I'd expect the whole bottle, not a whisky glass! Sounds quite the rip off, would have said 5 Euros sounded better for what you had.

I'd probably try Spain, far south near the crossing to Africa, where its English speaking and very warm.

They gave quite a bit more than you'd normally expect, not the whole bottle though, it was quite a fancy spot and the service and quality of food was fantastic, so I imagine it's one of those places that gets away with charging a bit more.

Yes coming to Australia is not cheap. My last visit back home, including 4 hour waits for planes meant that my travel time was close to 36 hours each way.

But it would be the best holiday you had. There's so much awesome stuff here, and so much awesome stuff that can kill you.

I'm disappointed in the winter here too... Snow just came 2 days ago, and the coldest it has been was like -10 to -15 celcius only, when it usually is -20 to -30 and couple of winters ago even -40... I WANT MY WINTER TOO! >

you really can get temp housekeeping work easily over the Christmas holiday period, trust me i work in hotel housekeeping.
you'll be doing simple stuff like stripping rooms, making beds and vacuming and such. can't help you with the air fair, that is hefty.

and yeah, there is a lot of stuff here that can kill you... but... "it's more scared of you than you are of it"
lol (how often did your mum tell you that?)

just don't leave your shoes outside, check them before you put them on even when left inside,
don't run in long grass on a hot day (dont walk on grass bare foot period.) and swim between the flags.
beware Bindi's, they will take you down.
and wear sun cream.
and don't turn your back on a Maggie in swooping season.
and beware drop bears - they will end you.
you ever heard of the nargen? respect aboriginal culture or it will eat you.

btw this is for the mellow/reletivly non lethal parts of australia. you go to NT or far north queensland, may the ghost of Steve Irwin help you because god will not.
well worth visiting. all that aside.

Try Cyprus. I lived there for a couple of years. Might not be boiling that time of year (I've had 3 or 4 Xmases there and it's normally about 21c and sunny) but is perfectly nice for UK people (ie. amazing in comparison to a British Winter, ahem, or even a summer a lot of the time these days...).

You see locals in scarves and coats and British people in Bikinis and Speedos sunbathing on the beach in wind traps.

Plus everyone speaks English pretty much, you drive on the right side of the road (ie. the left), and the signs are all amazingly similar. Oh and they have proper 3 point plugs

And some parts of the island are so heavy with British people it's like being in the UK but with sun.

And if you pine for snow at Xmas then go up Troodos mountains and they have a ski resort with about 3 or 4 proper runs. I went up there one year and it was like 24c and sunny by the beach, and -11c half an hour up the road (Limassol) in what felt like a blizzard. Nicely also feels like Austria or something the way the roads and houses/hotels look up the mountain (Mount Olympus).

WE FINALLY GOT SNOW IN SWEDEN (or atleast in skellefteå)
