1. Dump the weird 90's happy hardcore kick in the start
2. the snare is to quiet
3. the wobbles are off beat
4. the drums are off beat
5. needs a little eq'ing.

Need any tutorials, click on my sig, I produce and DJ professionally.

I'm not really qualified to comment with regards to the Dubstep side of things, but my personal opinion is that it doesn't have flow. Like DJ Almix stated, a lot of the wobbles/filter changes are offbeat as well as some of the start/stops being in places which totally break the fluidity. But take that with a pinch of salt, I know nothing on the topic!

Experiment a little with the soundstage, you've got more or less everything dead centre, try panning a couple of things.

Some of it sounds like legitimate dubstep, and the rest sounds like a jumbled mess. Now, I don't like dubstep in general, but your song is even less tolerable than even the most obnoxious dubstep songs.

Now, I'm not trying to bash it, but seeing as though I don't know a thing about the process of making dubstep, I really can't suggest how to fix things I don't know about. All I can say is that I really, really didn't like it.

This... sounded...

lets not talk how it sounded, now lets get to my tip:

i would start of by breaking down some normal Dubstep sounds, see what its that makes them sound good (skrillex would be a good example eh? ) and then try to copy that

once you manage that, experience with it

This is speaking from a guy who knows nothing about music so my tip here might not.. be legit

I will listen to it once i get home tonight and will give you honest feedback and any advice i can give you.

Dubstep is my preferred genre (along with D&B). I haver been producing music for a few years now and i will try to help you along the way as much as possible.

To bad dubstep is super easy to make

If your going for skrillex style you need to make sounds like this:

[Click the black play button to listen, warning, foul language]

http://www61.zippyshare.com/v/94264499/file.html

The genre of dubstep is not a hard at all. All you really have to do is make a simple bassline, add some bit crusher, make some LFO or filter automation clips to create the wobble and overlay it with a syncopated drum beat, copy-paste-add random samples and repeat.

Depends, it's probably easy from the perspective of somebody who's capable of doing it successfully without it being at all difficult for them.

Me on the other hand, I'd find rock and dubstep difficult. However, there's things I find really easy that others find difficult. I suspect DJ Almix is genuinely a DJ and makes his own music, so I'd probably suggest his, "it's easy" comment is because he finds it easy, as opposed to the usual narrow minded comment you might expect from somebody who looks down upon Dubstep.

However, I could be wrong, it has happened before.

Thanks, and yes, it's all relative. BUT, dubstep I give it credit due to the fact that it has a wide range of how easy or hard it is. For example, skrillex is hard to make, but a simple dubstep wobble is rather easy. There is complexity it dubstep that ranges from all sides, and the construction of the sound is rather detailed. Still rock is a little different, but the same in most respects. If you can play some chords, that doesn't mean your going to be able solo like crazy or play a long melody. Dubstep can range from anything to a simple drump beat and wobbles, to a melody, a bassline, wobble, distortion, subwobble, ect.

Edit:

Think of it this way

to skrillex - > Dubstep is ultra-simple, he's been doing it forever, doesn't mean it's easy for everyone, but still, the only way for it to be easy:

practice makes perfect.

So does NI Massive and FM8

Are you saying that mine are bad?

What are you basing this on?

I am not kicking up a fuss, I am just requesting some constructive criticism, rather than, "these are bad"

Is there anything that you have made that i can compare styles with?

Oh, judging from the fact that you call yourself 'DJ' Almix, I am assuming that you are in fact rather young. My experience has taught me that anyone that calls themselves by a name starting with 'DJ', is typically inexperienced. The term DJ means Disc Jokey coined when a radio presenter took two turntables and mixed two songs together by matching the tempo's, many years ago. It literally means to jockey (use the machine)the turntables. Are you a DJ? Or do you produce music? The two are very different. I am DJ and have been for the past 10 years. This follows the 3 years i spent in college studying music production using Reason and Cubase SX.

If you are going to give someone feedback on something they have done for the first time (Slayer267's tune) Then at least be civil. Point out what could do with being changed, but, explain to him how he could change it. Simply saying,
Quote: "1. Dump the weird 90's happy hardcore kick in the start"

doesn't help him. Explain to him your thoughts and any method you might use instead of the "weird 90's happy hardcore kick ".

and also, jumping onto his AGE because he names himself DJ almix is a tad dull isnt it? I have never before on this forum seen another member jump unto someones age *sighs*

You know what! I am not getting in to a forum argument! It solves absolutely nothing.

Lets all just work together to help others improve their skills.

But, for the record, I wasn't 'jumping' on anyones age as a direct comment, i was using his age as a means to show inexperience.

BUT, As i said, i am not here to get involved in squabbles. I commented on this thread to try to help Slayer. Since then, people have just taken it off topic. Lets get it back on topic and help Slayer.

Yes, that's the origin of 'DJ', but it has undergone a form of language change called 'broadening', the word means exactly what you've said it means (I DJ'd at Uni, in that sense) but its meaning now extends to a certain type of music production (my friend did that kind of DJing at Uni and was really good at it).

And the young whipper snapper has clarified what he meant in another post.

However, I don't see what relevance age has, I'm sure his view matters too.

which is stupid, you shouldnt use his AGE for that, especially considering were all "no agers" here on the internet.

Or just assume everyone is twelve.

And stop being so shoey defensive, Nobody here has tried to offend you, yet its sounding like someone stole your butter and threw it through your window..

I like the fact that it uses the full width of stereo at some points in the track; and the quantity of synths you have used isn't bad; far better than some of the tracks I hear with 1 or 2 instruments. Not that you could not create something cool with few instruments; it's just difficult to make something unique with few sounds; and you have a decent synth kit.

In my opinion the hihats need to be more consistent for atleast 3 or 4 bars in each 4. They are easy to neglect but can make a huge difference even when quiet. Alot of the bassline is off melody; the rythm of it does not seem to conform to emphasize beat 1 and 3; maybe because there is no consistency with the hihats.

What did you use; Reason? FL Studio? Logic? Cubase?

Quote: "All you really have to do is make a simple bassline"

DJ Almix

No way; this cannot be true; maybe for you as a pro or perhaps with your equipment and experience, but for me atleast making the bassline sound right is far from simple; otherwise my nephew could do it. I find it the most difficult part, but maybe it is because I am fussy with sounds in all genres of music; and the bassline is the main point in DS. A simple bassline to me is a low pitch wave synth; but without any modulation effects and tweaking it is just noise.

It does take art to get it to sound right on most speakers with or without woofers; getting the pitch and modulation to change at the right times; the use of reverbs and vocals to build up the intro; a simple bassline just does not do the business.

Judging by your music; which does sound good, even with the first 10 seconds of most of them it sounds like there is alot going on with reverbs, compressors and delays.

I do DJ at events, clubs and what have you I wear that term proudly as it's been a little warped over the years as now all I see is this

Modern DJ: Pressing play on MacBook

What I do and consider a real DJ: Scratching, beat matching, overlaying, live remixing, etc. Actual study of the art of turntablism, origins of old school music and development of turntablism such as deep house, jungle and hip-hop. And of coarse, getting the crowd going and keeping the energy flowing.

Still, I in no way said they your stuff is bad, I feel like you jumped to a weird conclusion from my statement. It's not my typical style, but that doesn't mean it's bad, you put a lot effort into it, and it abides by a genre, in fact, what do you define as a "good" or "bad" song? Seems a little odd, by basic logical a "bad" song could be just one that a person doesn't find desirable or is musically incorrect (off beat, off key, badly recorded, etc.), it's pretty much all what you make of it.

That being said, the poster here made his first dubstep, it's in no way bad. It is his first song, and I admit, my first songs were awful (trust me your doing A LOT better then I was my first time Slayer).

While it was a bit deragatory, there was reasoning behind it. I figured that most new producers (like I was and you were at one time) don't know all of the termaloigy. Still it was a bit out there and I appologize, but when it comes to new producers, I figure it's best to be as specific as possible about things.

I could have said:

Use a deeper kick drum, add some compression, maybe a bit of distortion later in an automation clip, you could use a simple sample or a drum machine.

versus

try and remove the kick at the begging and explore some other ones, it's a bit to crunchy and doesn't quite fit with the song. Try looking for some samples online like here: [a link to help them].

Thank you for that post.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain.

I apologise also. I probably came across a little strange. (i usually do!)

I understand that if you had used your technological knowledge to explain different methods to achieve various results.

I also now understand that you weren't flaming Slayer. I just really don't like it when people put others down for being new at something. In this life, we should share our skills and wisdom with others, not insult them not knowing what you know. 9 times out of 10, that person will know a whole lot more about something than you do! It doesn't get anyone anywhere! But, what you have put above, shows that feel the same way.

Hmm I don't think I've actually contributed other than defending posts out of the blue.

I did listen to the track, and to be honest, I'm not a brilliant producer of music, though I've tried but to be honest I'm a better listener, so I can't really comment on a technical level. Whilst not a fan of dubstep, I think it's a good first track and think it's worth pursuing more and seeing what you can do with it, especially if you enjoyed making it. We've got a Music & Sound FX section that's probably worth checking out, especially for feedback and receive advice on progressing further. And I think with any kind of art, it's definitely worth doing what you can to experiment.

Hope that's useful feedback.

I don't think I've seen you post before (though I'm sure you hang around other sections of the board) but I think it's just worth saying that actually people around GC are usually quite laid back and the back-and-forth people usually have isn't in argument but rather a 2-way discussion, even on heated topics, I rarely see people act in a genuinely disrespectful manner. So chances are when people make a post they're not trying to put anybody down.

It's the internet and we have to convey everything through text, so it's very difficult to tell what tone somebody posts.

This couldn't be more true.

It does take a lot to try to convey the correct emotions across the internet.

I do post quite a lot, just more in the WIP/Showcase/Script/X10/models and media threads.
