Hi, I've been playing around with FPSC Free while waiting for my
full version to arrive. Before updating it, it works fine, but
after an upgrade there's a half-second delay between keypresses
and mouse and actually moving. Could it be that it's the free
version, or is there a setting somewhere to fix it? Thanks.

It is most likely that your FPS is low. Can you post your system specs please?

I have an AMD Athalon 3000+ running at 2 GHz, 512MB RAM, and an
onboard ATI Radeon Express 200 with 128MB shared RAM.

If there's a way to disable some effects, shaders, etc, that might
work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, your graphics card, and RAM will need upgrading. If you don't want lag, then just optimize your levels well, and disable shader fx by going to File > Properties > Shader Effects.

One thing is, for the quality of graphics that the FPSC engine provides it give a pretty bad frame rate. It's unfortunate, but I'm moving on to Unity 3D. It's more complex but frame rates aren't an issue if you have a mid range spec machine.

The FPSC engine can't handle large amounts of polygons. It's really quite sad because I do really like the software.
